Academic Advisor

SALARY:$43,500.00 - $45,500.00 Annually

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY:

The Academic Advisor provides advising services to new and returning students in areas related to academic advisement including graduation and transfer requirements; advising students on various careers and on the requirements necessary for achieving career goals; develops and implements student outreach/recruitment; and monitors student progress. This position also provides guidance and mentoring to optimize the student experience to improve student retention and success and assist the College in achieving its mission and vision of service to the community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides academic advising to new and returning students
  • Provides support for daily functions of Admissions such as review of transcripts, test scores, and other admission documents, processes class registrations and responds to admission inquiries
  • Advises CCP students and Craven Early College students assisting with transition to career and college success
  • Maintains effective communication with newly enrolled and prospective students utilizing various modes of technology
  • Participates in cross-training activities for all areas of service in the First Stop (advising, testing, intake/admissions, financial aid)
  • Provides comprehensive academic and career planning services for students such as academic and career planning assessments, interpreting assessments, and assisting students in the development of an educational plan to address interests, skills and abilities
  • Collaborates with various areas within and outside of the Student Services unit to facilitate student recruitment, student success, retention and persistence
  • Assists with development of goals, objectives and learning outcomes for the Student Services unit in support of the College's strategic plan
  • Participates in open houses, new student orientation and various First Year Experience initiatives
  • Teaches college success skills courses
  • Assists in the identification of target groups for comprehensive student recruitment and outreach activities on and off campus; makes visits to high schools, workplaces, etc.
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College's mission, core values and goals

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in higher education administration, student personnel or other closely related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning

Two (2)  years' experience in academic advising, career development or other related function within higher education

  • Knowledge of advising practices and principles

  • Knowledge of career planning principles and practices
  • Knowledge of academic assessment
  • Knowledge of college policies and procedures, academic requirements, campus resources, student life and support services
  • Knowledge of customer service principles
