Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field of study.
  • Five years of work experience in general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable and/or payroll.
  • Five years of accounting experience in the North Carolina Community College System using Colleague (Datatel) software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field of study.
  • Ten years of work experience in general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable and/or payroll. 
  • CPA or CMA Certification.
  • Ten years of accounting experience in the North Carolina Community College System using Colleague (Datatel) software.

Position Description

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:  The Accountant reports to the Director of Financial Services/Controller. This position performs professional work requiring knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices (GAAP) and a solid understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, terminology and applied basis of accounting.

DUTIES:

  • Maintain the general ledger including preparation of journal entries with supporting analysis and documentation.
  • Assist with the year-end balancing, reconciling, closing, and financial statement preparation for state, county and institution funds including the preparation of year-end leave rollover and journal entries.
  • Assist with the set-up and monitoring of budgets for all funds.
  • Assists with reports as required and requested by the NCCCS, the NC State Auditor, the NC State Controller, and other government agencies, including the monthly 112 report.
  • Assists with quarterly and annual payroll tax reporting, including W-2 processing, to the IRS, Social Security Administration, NC State Department of Revenue, and other governmental agencies as required.
  • Maintains working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, FLSA, and other Federal and State laws relating to payroll and taxes
  • Assists as backup to Accounts Payable function
  • Maintain log for checks, CORE banking function and balancing of cashbooks to general ledger.
  • Manages the administration of the College’s CORE banking system including positive pay.
  • Manages the College’s PCI Compliance records in conjunction with Information Technology Services staff.
  • Manages the College’s Merchant Card Processing needs for credit card processing.
  • Assists with reconciling financial aid activity each month in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Financial Services and the Financial Aid Department.
  • Backup for the GAPS system and performs the drawdown of federal funds.
  • Aids the Assistant Controller in the timely completion of bank reconciliations.
  • Serves as backup with the E.A.G.L.E. process and performs internal audit duties in conjunction with the Assistant Controller.
  • Assists in the financial administration of the College’s grants in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Financial Services, grant writer and the grant project manager.
  • Assists with the accounting and financial statement preparation of the RCC Foundation in conjunction the Assistant Director of Financial Services, Foundation Treasurer and Director of Financial Services.
  • Cross train and serve as backup on business office functions such as payroll, accounts receivable, and cash receipts.
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers.
  • Commit to a program of continuous improvement in all areas of responsibilities including personal and professional development as well as the professional development of the staff members. 
  • Exercise attention to detail to minimize errors.
