Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 years related work experience in Horticulture and/or Greenhouse Production.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to provide guidance and advice regarding plant maintenance procedures, including integrated pest management programs, pest scouting and determination of appropriate biological and chemical pest control measures, and direct potting mix preparation.
  • Experience monitoring of greenhouse environment including heating, cooling, ventilating and lighting  
  • Oversee landscape maintenance for correctional setting.
  • Ability to provide guidance and advice regarding plant maintenance procedures, including integrated pest management programs, pest scouting and determination of appropriate biological and chemical pest control measures, and direct potting mix preparation.
  • Proven evidence of leadership ability, supervisory experience and commitment to teamwork
  • Strong computer skills and commitment to the use of technology in instruction  
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially with others in a team environment
  • Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission of a comprehensive community college
  • Effectiveness in the following College organizational competencies:

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates Degree from a regionally accredited institution in Horticulture, Agri-business, Greenhouse Production or a related field
  • Familiarity with plumbing and electrical control systems related to greenhouse operations. Aptitude for using mechanical devices
  • A minimum of 1 year of prior teaching experience in a classroom/lab setting
  • Proven experience in mentoring 
  • Prior teaching experience in a community college or correctional instructional setting

Position Description

The Adjunct Faculty, Horticulture (Prison Program) is a part-time position responsible for designing and implementing learning strategies for students; developing course syllabi and instructional materials; administering tests; maintaining accurate instructional records; maintaining a safe laboratory environment; communicating equipment and supply needs;  and other duties which support the mission and initiatives of the College.  This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Corporate Training and Workforce Development, School of Business, Engineering and Technical Studies.  The Adjunct Faculty, Horticulture has the following responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

  • Promotes College mission, values, and vision
  • Teaches assigned courses to meet program needs
  • Evaluates student progress and provides appropriate feedback
  • Prepare lesson plans, course overviews, and course syllabi
  • Uses and promotes appropriate technology to enhance student learning outcomes
  • Plan Seasonal Crop Production
  • Maintain Equipment and ensure proper storage and security of supplies
  • Ability to provide guidance and advice regarding plant maintenance procedures, including integrated pest management programs, pest scouting and determination of appropriate biological and chemical pest control measures, and direct potting mix preparation

ADA Summary:

ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information and exercise good judgment in the collection, evaluation, and analysis of data, and student assessment, curriculum development, and program review.  Other requirements include ease of mobility in supervising students in classroom/lab settings, carrying supplies and other instructional materials, ability to move, climb, or crawl under equipment or in lab settings, use of keyboard, effective use of all forms of communication (oral, written, visual, auditory), and the ability to perform general teaching duties.

Salary Range: 

$17.00 - $20.00 per hour based on candidate's experience, education, and the state budget
