Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma plus specialized training with two (2) years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Must meet all requirements to become certified as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the “North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission” [Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Certification]
Knowledge of Federal Laws, North Carolina General Statutes, Winston Salem City ordinances and Forsyth Tech policies
Effective communication skills (oral and written) to interact in a courteous and professional manner with the public, representatives of the legal system, Police Department personnel, College officials, faculty, staff, students, and visitors
Ability to adapt to an often-changing working schedule, which may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays
Ability to effectively and safely interact with a diverse campus environment
Experience with Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace, spreadsheets, presentation and collaboration apps and software
Valid Driver’s License with a driving record in good standing
Preferred Qualifications
Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field
Sworn Law Enforcement experience in a campus environment
Position Description
The Campus Police Officer will be a member of a diverse team that performs a variety of duties to protect members of the College community from harm; provide a high degree of security for College property, and that of students, employees, and visitors. Assist in all types of emergency situations and assures orderly movement of traffic on campus. Enforce North Carolina State Laws and City Ordinances.
Patrol College property on foot, bicycle, or in a vehicle to protect lives and property
Conduct investigations of all accidents, crimes and incidents by interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects, through the identifications and collection of physical evidence, searching persons, vehicles, and other premises in accordance with legal guidelines
Respond to all emergency calls including potentially violent and life-threatening situations
Provide crime prevention strategies, inspect College property for safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, unsecured doors, or other unusual occurrences, refers victims to appropriate services, provides directions, escorts, vehicle, and door unlocks assistance, operates necessary equipment
Enforce state laws, city ordinances, and College regulations
Respond to fire, intrusion, and security alarms and emergency calls boxes
Integrate Community Policing into routine patrol activity and utilizes COP concepts to resolve problems
Maintain radio communications
Render immediate and temporary medical aid to injured and or ill persons in emergency situations
Intervene and diffuse crisis situations as non-violently as possible
Document all activities and prepares written reports as required by departmental policy.
Prosecute offenders as necessary by filing criminal charges, referral to the appropriate College authorities, or through other measures such as trespassing individuals not affiliated with campus
Perform other related duties as assigned
Attend and represent the department as assigned at various meetings, events, etc.
Work special assignments
Prepare and present testimony in criminal, traffic, judicial hearings, and grand jury
Prepare written reports of activities and incidents with accuracy and attention to detail
Attend advanced and specialized training activities
Act and direct the actions of others quickly and make intelligent decisions in emergency situations
Maintain considerable working knowledge of modern policing principles
Maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive information
Attend specialized training activities that enhance job performance and foster diversity, equity and inclusion
Foster diversity, equity and inclusion with colleagues and students

Hearing ability sufficient to monitor radio communication/oral communication. Example: Hear and monitor alarms, radio and oral communication, or a cry for help or assistance
Physical abilities to defend self and others and maintain physical control of suspect. Example: Apply handcuffs, leg irons, and waist chains/belts and gain physical control of a suspect within 10 seconds
The ability to manipulate equipment. Examples: Be able to properly and safely use firearms (handgun and shotgun) and drive a vehicle under various conditions (such as maneuvering between objects)
Be able to qualify with a firearm (handgun and shotgun)
Be able to qualify with a handgun using both the strong and weak hand from the standing, kneeling and prone positions. Be able to properly use a gas mask and riot baton
Be able to run approximately 400 yards; climb steps; drag 150 lbs. dummy; crawl through a darkened 40 ft. culvert; push open an obstructed metal door; and perform sit-ups and push-ups
Vision sufficient for observation and assessment necessary in law enforcement. Example: Observe suspects and others, see to drive, and have adequate vision for surveillance and for protecting self and others
Sense of touch sufficient to perform a physical examination and to detect movement. Example: Detect a pulse
