Position Description

DEFINITION:
To perform a variety of duties that involve providing information and support to students in an effort to increase retention.  Duties include academic, and personal counseling; sharing information about program requirements, admissions requirements, course and program requirements and related matters; offer workshops and community resource collaboration to promote holistic wellness. Counseling is offered at 2 campuses and 2 satellite sites.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives general supervision from the Director of Counseling
  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over Counseling Administrative Assistant

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions: 
Perform the following functions while monitoring and assisting students on assigned caseload: 
 
Academic Support

  • Provide academic support in an educational setting for a variety of concerns and make appropriate campus referrals as needed.
  • Provide information and assistance to continuing and prospective students regarding the policies and procedures of the college, including admissions, academic and graduation requirements; assist students in interpreting the college catalog
  • Manage a large caseload of students with regular communication using AVISO Retention Software
  • Provide students with general course requirements, prerequisite information and transfer requirements; review transfer credits with students; refer students to appropriate staff for specific program information
  • Assist students in setting academic and career goals.
  • Discuss program options for students who are considering a major change. 
  • Assist students with withdrawal from classes; make referrals to on campus and community resources as needed to address concerns that result in withdrawal from a class or classes
  • Assist students who are classified as being on Academic Warning; develop strategies for success
  •  Assist students with academic concerns and soft skills to increase retention
  • Assist students transferring to various colleges and universities; refer students to resource materials to obtain information about colleges; contact educational institutions to receive current admissions information; work with college Career and Technical academic areas to increase transferability of programs to other colleges
  • Serve as a liaison between students and faculty to clarify issues and problems; recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints
  • Implement student success and retention strategies to ensure student success.
  • Coordinate and participate in special counseling activities

 
Counseling Support

  • Provide counseling support in an educational setting for a variety of concerns (i.e.:  mental health, domestic violence, depression, anxiety, grief, Title IX, wellness, etc.) make appropriate community referrals as needed. (The college’s counseling model is based on assessing and making community referrals as appropriate for the student need)
  • Serve as a liaison in conjunction with other support staff and faculty to coordinate a holistic approach for student wellness concerns.
  • Assist students with personal concerns to promote wellness and thus increase retention
  •  Develop and implement workshops, presentations, and tabling events for in-class and on campus promotion of holistic wellness.

Other Important Functions:

  • Participate in the outreach activities of the college by community relationships (Coastal Horizons, W.H.A.T., MedNorth, Open Gate, etc.)
  • Assist with student registration as assigned
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

 

Qualifications

 QUALIFICATIONS: 

Knowledge of:

  • College policies and procedures regarding admission standards and educational program requirements
  • The concepts of adult learning
  • General educational requirements, and academic grade and unit equivalents
  • Purpose and function of community colleges
  • Transfer requirements and procedures of regional four year educational institutions
  • Principles and procedures of educational and career advising
  • Business letter writing and basic report preparation
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation

Ability To:

  • Advise students regarding course work needs to meet academic program requirements
  • Establish a rapport with students and create an atmosphere conducive to counseling
  • Interpret and apply the policies and procedures of the college
  • Refer students to appropriate college staff for additional counseling, program advising, testing and related matters
  • Evaluate test scores and previous education and training
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully, both verbally and in writing
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    1. Making observations
    2. Reading and writing
    3. Communicating with others
    4. Operating assigned equipment
    5. Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:
    1. Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    2. Operating assigned equipment
    3. Handling varied tasks simultaneously 
    4. Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:
    1. Making sound decisions
    2. Responding to questions
    3. Demonstrating intellectual capabilities

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
