Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in higher education, educational leadership, student personnel, or a related field from a regionally accredited college or university required. 
  • At least five years of substantive and progressive leadership experience in Student Affairs and/or education administration required.
  • At least three years of leadership responsibility in student conduct required.
  • Experience in crisis intervention and conflict management required.
  • Ability to problem solve in a collaborative manner and to make difficult and timely decisions utilizing sound judgment required.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and concerns of a diverse student population required.
  • Knowledge of current trends and legal matters related to student conduct, Clery, Title IX, VAWA, and DFSCA required.   
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from internal or external constituencies, regulatory agencies, or members of the community required.
  • Excellent skills in data and systems management required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Colleague and Maxient software preferred.
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures preferred.

The Dean-Student Development leads and assists in providing programs and services designed to enhance students' academic and personal success. This position assists students in understanding their rights and responsibilities as members of the College community and serves as the primary contact for non-academic student complaints beyond the director/coordinator level. Under the guidance of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, implements the College's student code of conduct. This position also coordinates compliance activities related to Title IV consumer disclosures, Title IX, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), Clery Act, and the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act (DFSCA), and Title IV. The Dean-Student Development reports directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management.

 

 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serves as the College's student conduct officer and manages and implements the Gaston College Student Code of Conduct for students in both curriculum and economic and workforce development programs. Ensures that all Student Code of Conduct disciplinary procedures are followed.
  2. Serves as a resource and advisor to faculty and staff dealing with student misconduct and students in distress. 
  3. Engages students in developmentally appropriate conversations and collaborates as needed with faculty, staff, Campus Police, and Human Resources to address and resolve student conduct matters. Develops and implements preventative efforts and educational sanctions designed to enhance student learning related to expected standards of behavior. 
  4. Leads and oversees prompt, fair, and impartial investigations, adjudication, and sanctions of student conduct cases referred to Student Affairs 
  5. Oversees the administration of the student conduct software system (Maxient) and provides campus-wide leadership in the application of the software. 
  6. Maintains disciplinary record-keeping process in compliance with College and state policy on student records retention. 
  7. Develops and implements training programs to educate the College community about the Student Code of Conduct, disciplinary procedures, classroom management skills, and other matters related to student conduct, Title IX, VAWA, and Clery Act. 
  8. Creates and revises publications and other written material pertaining to the disciplinary policies and procedures. 
  9. Serves as a core team member of the College's CARE (Conduct • Awareness • Response • Encouragement) Team. 
  10. Investigates sexual and other unlawful harassment or misconduct cases involving students and assists the College's Title IX Coordinator/Deputy Coordinator with the timely resolution of these investigations. 
  11. Administers, coordinates, and manages projects and initiatives in relation to compliance with NC state and federal laws (Title IV, Title IX, VAWA, Clery Act, and DFSCA), SACSCOC, and the NC Community College System Board Code. 
  12. Actively participates in conferences, workshops, etc. to stay abreast of current movements in the field of student conduct and Title IX investigations. Continuously identifies and integrates best practices into knowledge base and practice. 
  13. Reviews and responds to non-academic student complaints and grievances. Serves as a proactive solution-oriented advocate for student concerns. 
  14. Coordinates the annual publication of the Student Handbook. 
  15. Works cooperatively with team members and colleagues, contributing positively and constructively to the achievement of team and College objectives and provides a high level of service by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and partnerships. 
  16. Maintains a high standard of professionalism in representing the College including confidentiality in all aspects of the position's responsibilities and adherence to policies, procedures, and other established guidelines.  Adheres to professional accountability and accepts responsibility for managing situations and problems. 
  17. Assists the Vice President in planning, implementing and administering the goals and objectives of the Student Affairs Division. 
  18. Provides planning and operational support to the Vice President through active participation on task forces, committees, grant programs, and special projects. 
  19. Performs other duties, responsibilities, or special projects as assigned by the Vice President.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Generally works in a traditional climate-controlled office environment and requires the ability to sit for extended periods.
  • Some walking, standing, and bending required, with the ability to lift and maneuver items weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Work environment can be stressful at times in dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines.
  • In addition to regular office hours, position sometimes requires evening and/or weekend hours, especially in response to crisis and concerns.
