The Digital Navigator provides individualized or small group assistance to community members, stakeholders, and adult learners and underserved populations who need affordable home internet service, affordable internet-capable devices, and/or coaching in introductory digital skills in order to become effective home internet users. This assistance is provided primarily by voice telephone but may also include email, text, video chat, face-to-face, and other communication methods that work for the learner.

The Digital Navigator will report to the Director, College and Career Readiness (CCR). The Digital Navigator will work collaboratively with other CCR Department and college staff to provide quality assistance.

 

Examples of Duties

 

  • Receive, return or initiate telephone contact with individuals seeking assistance or identified for assistance.
  • Discuss with each individual their home internet access or need for home internet access, technical experiences and their devices.
  • Assess individual technology, current digital skill level pertaining to what they need to accomplish the plan connectivity needs, and internet use priorities. Set agreed goals for Digital Navigator services, confirming the details with the individual.
  • Advise about free or affordable home internet service options for which they may qualify, assist with applying for services and supporting their efforts to secure service as needed.
  • Advise clients about sources of affordable computers or other internet connected devices for which they may qualify and support their efforts to acquire appropriate devices and where they can get help for repair as needed.
  • Offer coaching as necessary to use their home internet services in order to meet their internet use priorities. This includes, but is not limited to both in-person, phone, and online interactions, as well as referral to sources of additional digital literacy skills training.
  • Plan and manage assistance with the goal of fulfilling the agreed upon goals.
  • Type or word-process a variety of documents including general correspondence, reports, forms, applications and forms, copy and collate forms and records. Track progress and types of requests, keep accurate and timely records and report of outcomes.
  • Participate in the maintenance of office files, reports, and records and other data; gather and compile the required information as necessary; sort and file documents and records including High School Equivalency (HSE) paperwork, student records and catalogs according to standard policies and procedures.
  • Assist in new student orientation; compile a list of persons interested in the program, assist with pre-registration paperwork, and administer placement testing.
  • Have knowledge of Test of Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) written placement test, score and document results or any approved NRS test adopted for use by CCR.
  • Assist student with registration of HSE exams, creating accounts with online testing services, establishing email and multi-factor authentication steps.
  • Stay abreast of new developments and changes in related fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars and other programs as appropriate.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Assist the literacy education program in meeting or exceeding state benchmark percentages for completion of Education Functional Levels (EFL), Measurable Skills Gains (MSG), Post-testing, and students obtaining and retaining employment.
  • Assist students entering postsecondary education or job training.
  • Take professional development trainings, webinars, meetings, seminars, and conferences.
  • Follow the North Carolina Community College System College and Career Readiness Adult Basic Education Content Standards and Benchmarks.
  • Excellent multitasking, time management and organizational skills.
