Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in school counseling, agency counseling, or student development counseling
  • Three years of work experience in counseling

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three years of work experience in counseling in a community college or four-year university setting
  • Currently credentialed in NCC, NCSC, or NC LPC

Position Description

Oversee all efforts in the departments of counseling, disability services, academic probation, testing, and career development.  Supervise staff members in all the above departments. Responsible for counseling students for campus programs.  Coordinate the individual and group counseling services that support current and prospective community college students in meeting their career development, personal, educational, and academic goals. Administer and interpret career inventories.  Conduct classroom workshops for personal and career development.  Provide personal counseling as needed.  Refer students as needed to local and state support agencies.  Provides pre-admission advisement as needed for applicants. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide the overall leadership, management, and supervision for the Department of Counseling and Special Services.
  • Ensures the provision of counseling, mental health, educational skills, and ADA services.
  • Oversee counseling, academic probation, disability services, testing, and career development.
    DUTIES:
  • Develop a strategic plan for the departments including measurable goals and evaluate the departments based upon these goals. Implement assessments to ensure the effective operation of the Student Outreach and Support areas.
  • Complete Service Evidence and Annual Plans for the Counseling and Special Services Department.
  • Develop policies and procedures related to the departments within the Counseling and Special Services Department.
  • Plan, direct and oversee programs for the departments that will enhance the prospective student, current student, and past student experience.
  • Work closely with all College constituencies including faculty, staff, and community members to encourage the development of programs that will enhance the recruitment and retention of students in curriculum programs, continuing education/occupational extension programs, College and Career Readiness (CCR) programs, and College and Career Promise (CCP) programs.
  • Select, train, and evaluate staff members in the Counseling and Special Service areas including performance evaluation reviews.
  • Represent the College at local, regional, and state levels as needed to support the mission of the College and the Student Support areas.
  • Supervise department members in the Schools who are responsible for counseling, academic probation, and awareness programming.  
  • Supervise Specialist for testing and assessment who is responsible for the management of the college's testing center and the schedule and administering of enrollment and academic testing.
  • Serve as Testing Center back-up
  • Serve as the campus ADA coordinator and maintain current knowledge of ADA requirements.
  • Ensure that faculty, staff, administration, and students are aware of changes in ADA regulations.
  • Act as an advocate for students with disabilities.
  • Serve as the college’s liaison on ADA and disability-related issues with community agencies and organizations and the public schools.
  • Assist students under the ADA Services in the process of requesting, documenting, and receiving reasonable accommodations.
  • Maintain appropriate record keeping and data collection related to ADA Services.
  • Provide personal, academic, and career counseling for students.
  • Refer students as needed to the appropriate human services agencies including Vocational Rehabilitation, Department of Social Services, local and regional mental health associations, local medical centers, employment institutions, and the health department.
  • Administer and interpret career interests, values, and personality inventories as well as computerized software guidance programs to students.
  • Administer and interpret the admissions placement tests for students on an as-needed basis to support the Specialist for testing and assessment.
  • Review academic probation lists and collaborate with success coaches to advise these students.
  • Register students on academic probation and offer additional supportive services (seminars, workshops, academic and personal counseling) for these students.
  • Register students to assist faculty during peak times of registration.
  • Serve on institutional committees as assigned.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Student Success.
