Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school graduate with five years of practical experience as a law enforcement officer, administrator, or specialist in a field related to the criminal justice system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years teaching law enforcement training courses. 
  • Valid N.C. driver’s license
  • Instructor certified by the NC CJ Standards Commission or eligible for certification.
  •  BLET School Director certified by the NC CJ Standards Commission, or be eligible for certification

Position Description

The Director of the Basic Law Enforcement Training program will have administrative responsibility for planning, scheduling, presenting, coordinating, reporting, and managing the BLET program. The Director will oversee and coordinate the college’s Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy in cooperation with partner agencies, working closely with North Carolina Training and Standards, certified instructors, staff, and local law enforcement to ensure cadets have a quality educational experience and complete each sponsored accredited criminal justice training course.

  • Carry out the responsibilities of the School Director as described in the North Carolina Administrative Code (12NCAC 09.0202 (a) and (b).
  • Meet the expectations of the school director as stated in the BLET Course Management Guide.
  • Maintain accurate scholastic and attendance records of enrolled students and submit reports to the State as required
  • Recruit, screen, interview, hire, and evaluate all part-time instructors.
  • Provide high-quality instruction in basic law enforcement training courses.
  • Participate in recruiting efforts.
  • Maintain positive and professional relationships with students, faculty, staff, administration, and community law enforcement agencies. 
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Review each instructor’s lesson plans and other instructional materials to ensure conformance to Commission standards and minimize repetition and duplication of subject matter.
  • Administer the course delivery by Commission procedures and standards, consider advisory guidelines issued by the Commission, and ensure that the training offered is safe and effective.
  • Select and schedule instructors certified by the Commission based on student/instructor ratios.
  • Provide each instructor with a current commission-approved course outline and all necessary information concerning the instructor’s duties and responsibilities.
  • Arrange for the timely availability of audiovisual aids, materials, publications, facilities, and equipment for training in all topic areas.
  • Formalize and schedule the course curriculum by the curriculum standards.
  • Maintain strict compliance with NC Law Enforcement Training and Standards Commission record keeping and other state, federal, and college standards.
  • Assist in the planning, budgeting, and use of departmental funds.
  • Establish and maintain robust partnerships with “customer” law enforcement agencies.
  • Identify needs and develop plans and projections for academy growth or organizational improvements.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Manage a fleet of vehicles to ensure vehicles are safe and road-ready for training.
  • Inspect, maintain, evaluate, repair, and purchase specialized equipment such as Simunition, CPR, and Haz-Mat.
  • Inspect, maintain, evaluate, repair, and purchase the different weapons used for training. 
  • Operate and maintain the Virtra Simulator.
  • Be available to students, instructors, and administration 24 hours/day during the course delivery.
  • Manage and supervise the staff and cadre of part-time instructors.
  • Locate and coordinate alternate training sites such as the firearms range, driving track, and scenario-based training sites. 
  • Oversee training conducted at alternate sites to ensure safety and compliance with Training and Standards. 
  • Be available to work a flexible schedule.
