Minimum Qualifications

  • Hold an active unencumbered license or multistate licensure privilege to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina
  • Two years of full-time experience as a faculty member in a Board-approved nursing program
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing
  • Two years’ full-time experience as a Registered Nurse
  • Three years’ experience as a coordinator or higher for an accredited nursing program
  • Academic, nursing or other medical leadership experience to lead the program to accomplish the mission, goals, and expected program outcomes
  • North Carolina Board of Nursing Teaching & Learning Requirement or approved plan to meet within three years of hire date demonstrated by one of the following:
    1. completion of 45 contact hours of Board-approved continuing education courses
    2. completion of a certificate program in nursing education
    3. nine semester hours of graduate course work in adult learning and learning principles
    4. national certification in nursing education
    5. documentation of completion of structured, individualized development activities of at least 45 contact hours approved by the Board.
  • Use of computer software (email, Microsoft Office, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience with improving and maintaining NCLEX pass rates in an academic setting

Position Description

The Nursing Program Director is responsible for providing leadership for all VGCC nursing programs.   The Director ensures equitable access and success for all students through collaborative leadership and management of the student admission process and throughout the nursing curriculum. The Director collaborates with faculty to ensure student and program learning outcomes are being met.  Additionally, the Director provides guidance, mentoring, and evaluation for all full-time and part-time nursing faculty.  This position is a 12-month position and reports to the Dean of the School of Health Sciences.
 
This position is assigned to the VGCC Henderson Campus, in Henderson, NC; although, some travel to other counties in the college’s service area is possible. Consistent with VGCC’s Teleworking Policy, this position is eligible for up to 1 day per week of telework after the first 6 months of employment in this position.

Essential Duties:

  • Leads all aspects of program planning and implementation in collaboration with faculty:
    1. Serves as a liaison for Nursing programs and clinical affiliates.
    2. Reviews clinical locations and schedules of available preceptors. Assigns student preceptors accordingly. This should be NUR 213 faculty.
    3. Verifies minimum requirements are met for full-time and part-time faculty according to the NCBON rules.
    4. Oversees student clinical paperwork completed by instructors.
    5. Conducts initial orientation for clinical instructors regarding their roles in facilitating the student experience; assigns clinical instructors to course faculty.
    6. Ensures preceptor orientation is scheduled and led by NUR 213 faculty.  Supports faculty in resolution of preceptor concerns.
    7. Visits clinical sites to assess nursing faculty and students.    
    8. Consults with students and clinical instructors to ensure student needs are adequately met. Supports NUR 213 faculty in their consultations with preceptors regarding student needs.
    9. Meets with the students regarding clinical scheduling and other needs, if needed.
    10. Submits clinical requests and send student information to clinical sites each semester.
    11. Ensures SimLab Coordinator identifies and supports the transfer of knowledge from the classroom to lab and ultimately to the clinical setting.
    12. Supports faculty collaboration with SimLab Coordinator to assist with the remedial training in the SimLab.
    13. Collaborates and provides leadership for active teaching in the classroom in regards to critical thinking and clinical judgment, and use of Next Gen NCLEX questions.
    14. Manages digital platforms and analyzes data to improve to improve program learning outcomes.        
    15. Collaborates with faculty to complete annual Board of Nursing reports and Program Descriptive reports at required time intervals.
    16. Collaborates with N.C. A&T to support the RIBN program.
    17. Manages nursing program budgets.
    18. Maintains a minimum of five posted office hours per week on campus for student conferences.  These hours may be extended at the discretion of the dean during registration or other time periods.
    19. Maintains articulation and affiliation agreements.

 

  • Leads nursing program evaluation including but not limited to, course completion, program retention, licensing exam pass rate, job placement, and graduate surveys.

 

  1. Aggregates, disaggregates, and analyzes data to support the improvement of student learning outcomes.
  2. Collaborates with faculty to evaluate test questions used in all nursing programs.

 

  •  Collaborates with the faculty evaluate the student program acceptance process for fairness, equity, and effectiveness.   
  • Supports student success and informs the academic dean of any student issues (academic, attendance, behavior, cheating, and plagiarism) in assigned program(s) as soon as possible.  
  • Regularly participates as a member of assigned institutional committees and attend scheduled program/department meetings
  • Engages in professional development, specifically related to students, faculty, instruction, and program development.
  • Provides and supports guidance to students and faculty as it relates to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Performs community service activities, participates in faculty and student recruitment efforts as directed, and collaborate with marketing on strategies for program growth.
  • Experiments with and implements new, innovative teaching techniques.
  • Obtains and maintains certification in online delivery systems (LMS) as required by the college.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in technology.
  • Maintains licensure and teaching proficiency in all areas of nursing
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by Academic Dean or Vice President of Learning, Student Engagement & Success.

Physical Demands:

  • Light work that includes moving objects up to 30 pounds.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing
