Minimum Qualifications

1. Current unrestricted license or multistate licensure privilege to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina, required
2. Two (2) years of full-time experience as a faculty member in a board approved nursing program, required
3. Be experientially qualified to lead the program to accomplish the mission, goals, and expected program outcomes, required
4. Hold either a baccalaureate in nursing or a graduate degree in nursing from an accredited institution, if newly employed on or after January 1, 2016, hold a graduate degree from an accredited institution, required
5. Prior to or within the first three (3) years of employment, have preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development implementation and evaluation, appropriate to assignment, required. This preparation maybe demonstrated by one of the following:
a. completion of 45 contact hours of continuing education courses;
b. completion of a certificate program in nursing education;
c. nine semester hours of graduate course work;
d. national certification in nursing education; or
e. documentation of successful completion of structured, individualized development activities of at least 45 contact hours approved by the Board. Criteria for approval include content in the faculty role within the curriculum implementation, objectives to be met and evaluated, review of strategies for identified student population and expectations of student and faculty performance;
6. Maintain competence in the areas of assigned responsibility, required
7. Have current knowledge of nursing practice for the registered nurse and the licensed practical nurse, required
8. Strong commitment to the Isothermal Community College Learning College Initiative, required

Position Description

Position Summary

In support of the overall Learning College, the Director administers and manages practical nursing program based on a curriculum which provides career mobility opportunities for individuals who desire educational preparation in nursing


Supervises Directly
Full-time and adjunct faculty

Essential Responsibilities
1. Direct and manage all activities of the Practical Nursing Education (PNE) Program
2. Recommend and manage the program budget upon approval of the Dean
3. Have non-teaching time sufficient to allow for program organization, administration, continuous review, planning and development (NCBON Standard 21 NCAC 36.0317 Administration)
4. Plan and conduct PNE Advisory Committee meetings and PNE faculty meetings
5. Assist in identifying staff development needs and plan for activities to encourage academic and teaching excellence in the PNE program
6. Work with clinical teaching facilities and negotiate the cooperative agreements
7. Assist with the recruitment, admissions, and progression of students
8. Assume the leadership role in advising and counseling of students for academic and other concerns
9. Communicate information describing the nursing education program that is accurate, complete, consistent across mediums and accessible by the public (NCBON Standard 21 NCAC 36.0317 Administration)
10. Recommend student body size consistent with area demands for nurses, North Carolina Board of Nursing requirements, available faculty, and available clinical resources
11. Serve as a liaison between the practical nursing and other nursing programs to achieve maximum curriculum articulation and student mobility
12. Serve as liaison between the Practical Nursing program and other nursing programs (especially Foothill’s Nursing Consortium)
13. Manage the development, implementation, and evaluation of the PNE curriculum
14. Serve as course coordinator or designate full-time instructor to perform the role (course documents in Moodle)
15. Participate as needed in classroom, campus laboratory, and clinical scheduling/teaching
16. Implement, for quality improvement, a comprehensive program evaluation which includes assessment of program outcomes and evidence of program resources (NCBON Standard 21 NCAC 36.0317 Administrative Code, section D)
17. Evaluate faculty members and secretary on an annual basis and/or as needed
18. Represent Isothermal Community College in relationship to accrediting bodies, state agencies, professional organizations, and outreach opportunities
19. Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean/College Administration

Physical Requirements

Typical office environment, frequently lifting and carrying items up to 25 lbs.; frequently twisting or bending at the waist or reaching overhead; frequently traveling between buildings on campuses, to other centers or off campus to attend meetings and conference; frequently listening to and talking with faculty, staff and students in person, by telephone, or e-mail; frequently sitting at a desk or workstation using a computer display, keyboard, and mouse.
