Minimum Qualifications

An Associate’s degree is required. At least one year of financial aid experience is required. Candidate must understand and follow oral and written instructions to interpret, explain and enforce departmental policies and procedures; organizational skills to manage time, prioritize work and handle multiple tasks simultaneously; possess a strong work ethic; the ability to work as a team member with minimal supervision; and the ability to maintain confidentiality of student records in compliance with the federal regulations regarding privacy. Candidate must demonstrate good interpersonal skills to work with students and constituencies across the institution and, including staff at all levels, faculty, and committees. A valid North Carolina driver’s license with a good driving record sufficient to be insured under the Wayne Community College auto insurance policy is required. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

 A Bachelor’s degree is preferred. A National Career Readiness Certificate and bilingual are preferred.

 

Position Description

The Financial Aid Specialist will promote the availability of financial aid and advise students of eligibility for all federal, state, internal and some external financial aid programs. Complete student verification process for eligibility and ensure accuracy of information for file completion and compliance prior to making an award offer to the student. Perform data entry functions using the College’s software, Ellucian Colleague, and the United States Department of Education’s web-based programs for federal application processing including the import of Institutional Student Information Records (ISIR), reviewing student aid eligibility and other financial aid functions. Assist with offer packaging and enrollment verification and certification of state grant funding via the state supported website. Manage an assigned caseload of student financial aid records, including verification, award administration, and notifying students of revised award offers and monitoring Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) at the end of each term. Assist with the maintenance of a federal or state program for compliance and reconciliation; serve on an internal committee to award scholarships.  Provide financial aid information to prospective and current students and work with internal and external college constituents for internal and community based financial aid workshops, attend recruiting events and participate in professional development activities to keep abreast of financial aid regulations and processes.  Provide updates on program policy changes or new regulations as they occur. Maintain current knowledge of applicable federal, state and institutional regulations and standards to ensure compliance. The Specialist is required to participate in professional development activities and required employee training; serve on institutional committees as appointed, travelling locally for training events, conferences and workshops; and will perform all other duties as assigned by the Director and the Associate Vice President. *Occasional overnight travel may be required.
