Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree and demonstrated industry experience and/or demonstrated competencies in the teaching discipline or alternate portfolio detailing industry experience and/or demonstrated competencies in the teaching discipline.
  • Ability to operate equipment associated with the horticulture department.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in horticulture or related field.
  • Teaching experience in a community college.
  • Industry Recognized Credentials (ex. North Carolina Pesticide License, Certified Plant Professional, Registered Landscape Contractor, Certified Arborist, Landscape Industry Certified, etc.) 
  • Ability to develop successful strategies for enrollment growth, K-12 and higher education partnerships, student success, and student retention.

Position Description

As salaried employees, Faculty work a minimum of 40 hours per week, with a required minimum of 20-24 on-campus hours Monday through Friday. In certain program areas and during certain periods, such as advising and registration, Faculty may be required to work more than the minimum on-campus hours. Focused on student success, Faculty support the College’s mission by facilitating student learning in and outside of class through high-quality instruction, academic support, and informed advising.

Example of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Providing appropriate and effective instruction. 
    1. Teaching classes per the College’s teaching load formula in combinations including day, evening, weekend, off-campus, and online as the College requires. 
    2. Providing relevant learning opportunities that promote student engagement and retention.
    3.  Staying current in their field and in teaching methodology.
    4. Creating meaningful assessments and evaluating student work according to departmental standards.
    5. Maintaining accurate student records, including course attendance.
    6. Being available to students during office or lab hours for assistance.
    7. Providing regular grade updates through Moodle gradebook.
  1. Providing accurate, informed advising.
    1. Maintaining accessible office or lab hours.
    2.  Understanding College policies and procedures, degree requirements, and transfer agreements.
    3. Providing students with current information regarding career opportunities, as appropriate.
    4.  Being informed about College services and support for students.
  1. Recruiting students, including participation in open houses, College events, and recruitment fairs.
  2. Engaging in continuous improvement efforts.
  3. Building positive, effective relationships with internal and external partners.
  4. Participating in student club activities and events. 
  5. Assisting with maintaining an accurate inventory of program supplies and accreditation reports.
  6. Assisting with live projects.
    1.  Maintenance of classroom and laboratory areas (including greenhouses, nursery and outdoor areas occasionally requiring weekend and holiday maintenance)
  7. Serving on College committees and other duties as assigned.
