Minimum Qualifications

  1. Associate Degree in Medical Assisting or related field (e.g. Medical Lab Technology).

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Assisting or related field (e.g., Public Health).
  2. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential.
  3. Knowledgeable in course content.
  4. Knowledgeable in Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB) Core Curriculum.

Position Description

Statement of Primary Purpose
Under the direction of the Medical Assisting Program Coordinator and the Dean of Health & Human Services, the primary purpose of a Medical Assisting instructor is to provide quality instruction for the students of Western Piedmont Community College.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties
In addition to the responsibilities of classroom teaching, instructors should demonstrate concern for their own professional growth, for their immediate field of interest, for the education profession in general, and for the progress and well-being of the entire College community.
Since effective teaching is the major goal of the College, the instructor should be committed to the following:

 

  • Maintaining an acceptable work load and student office hours based on College policy.
  • Advising and guiding students assigned to them by Student Services.
  • Teaching assigned courses in accordance with current course outlines.
  • Maintaining course syllabi and text selections in cooperation with appointed supervisor.
  • Providing support to assigned supervisor in regards to scheduling of classes and budget construction.
  • Maintaining acceptable standards of conduct as outlined by College policy.
  • Maintaining effective and cooperative relationships with the schools, colleges, universities, governmental agencies, and employers in the regions.
  • Maintaining sound fiscal management practices that provides the resources necessary to achieve the College’s objectives.
  • Maintaining certifications and licenses necessary for employment eligibility.
  • Showing a commitment to the philosophy, objectives, and policies of the College and division.
  • Demonstrating a commitment to the community served by the College.
  • Demonstrating and maintaining professional expertise in primary academic discipline(s).
  • Engaging in regular assessment of instructional goals, methods, and results.
  • Participating in Division activities and perform other duties as assigned by the Division Dean.
  • Developing instructional plans.
  • Directing student learning.
  • Assessing student progress in achieving theory.
  • Assessing performance requirements of the program in cognitive, psychomotor, and affective learning domains.

Program Specific Duties

  • Under supervisor’s direction, review, select, and order course textbooks and materials
  • Develop and maintain course documents and submit current documents to the Division Office.
  • Remain current and competent in Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB) Core Curriculum objectives included in their teaching assignment as evidenced by educational and/or experience.
    • Serve as additional MAERB approved Practicum Coordinator as designated by the Program Director as follows:
    • Remain knowledgeable about the Medical Assisting program’s evaluation of student performance and learning, ensuring appropriate student evaluation of achievement in the practicum experience.
    • Assist the Program Director/Practicum Coordinator in selection and approval of appropriate Practicum sites; provide orientation for the on-site supervisors and provide oversight of the Practicum experience including on-site assessment of student experiences and the quality of learning opportunities at least once during each term students are assigned to the Practicum site.
    • Provide continual supervision and sufficient evaluation of student achievement in the practicum experience using site visits, phone calls, and surveys.
    • Ensure that students complete 240 hours of unpaid practicum experience with an approved Clinical Affiliate.
