Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or minor from an accredited institution in Math with recent teaching or coaching experience with emphasis in algebra, statistics and calculus  
  • Flexible schedule (able to work morning, afternoon and possibly evenings and weekends) in  order to accommodate the schedules of members of the cohort
  • May be needed to work at other locations
  • Creativity, flexibility and openness to change
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills (including familiarity with MS Office) and commitment to the use of technology in instruction
  • Ability to work effectively and collaborate with others in a team environment
  • Familiarity with and appreciation for the mission of a comprehensive community college
  • Effectiveness in the following College organizational competencies:
      -    Translating College purpose, values, and vision into organizational action
      -    Collaborating and facilitating
      -    Creating and innovating
      -    Anticipating and responding to change

Position Description

The part-time FeMS (Females in Math and Science) Math Coach is responsible for assisting students enrolled in math and science courses with mathematical concepts, applications and related study skills.  The math coach collaborates with faculty and the FeMS Navigator to help increase awareness of services and services and develop skills and confidence necessary for academic success. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean, General Studies and Academic Support.   This position is funded through a North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation grant.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide assistance to students that is tailored to the specific needs and learning styles of FeMS students both onsite and online 
  • Maintain appropriate paperwork and documentation including that needed for FTE recording and audit purposes
  • Assist in monitoring the proper usage of the classroom/lab
  • Collaborate with faculty and FeMS Navigator concerning students’ academic progress and needs
  • Assist in recommending appropriate resources for the coaching center
  • Assist FeMS Navigator with execution of activities required of FeMS students
  • Assist with assessment and evaluation of the coaching center services and processes
  • Assist with development of meaningful evaluations of services and use data to inform decision making processes
  • Assist FeMS Navigator with meeting needs of students, faculty and staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned that support the College mission and initiatives

ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information and exercise good judgment in the collection, evaluation and analysis of data and student assessment, curriculum development, and program review; ease of mobility in supervising students in the clinical and classroom settings, carrying equipment, supplies and other instructional materials; travel between campus locations may be required; and effective use of all forms of communication including use of computers.

Salary Range:
