Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution 
  • Strong ability to tutor students in developmental math
  • Demonstrated proficiency with MLA and APA formats
  • Knowledge of grammar, writing techniques, reading strategies, and vocabulary expansion
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to thoroughly assist with the informational needs of individuals
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office 2010) and commitment to using technology
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to change
  • Flexible schedule (able to work morning, afternoon, evenings and possibly weekends)
  • May be needed to work at other locations
  • Openness and willingness to engage in professional development activities
  • Ability to be self-directed and able to work effectively and collaboratively with others in a team environment

Position Description

                    This part-time position has no benefits and will not exceed 25-26 hours a week.  The position is needed to work morning, day, and evening hours.

Summary:

The part-time Test Preparation Lab and Writing Coach provides management and tutoring for the Test Preparation Lab in the Learning Commons. In addition to the Test Preparation Lab, this position will also assist students in the Writing/Reading Coaching Center in the Learning Commons. Primary duty includes providing writing, reading and math assistance designed to promote student success on the College’s placement tests. This position reports directly to the Coordinator, Academic Support.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Coordinator, Academic Support and Director, Learning Commons and staff to respond to the needs of students both onsite and online 
  • Maintain open, robust, and timely communication with colleagues and supervisor
  • Assist in coordinating the Test Preparation Lab
  • Analyze problems and recommend solutions as needed
  • Prepare reports as requested by the Director, Learning Commons and/or Coordinator, Academic Support
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of student test scores by following FERPA regulations and carefully monitoring student records at the workstation for security
  • Maintain tracking paperwork for the test preparation lab and documentation needed for FTE recording and audit purposes as it relates to the Writing and Reading Coaching Center
  • Assist in recommending and the management of resources for students
  • Assist in the promotion and awareness of the Test Preparation Lab and Learning Commons services among faculty, staff and students
  • Assist the Full-time Lead Writing and Reading Coach with the daily operation of the Writing/Reading Coaching Center
  • Collaborate regularly with the Full-time Lead Writing and Reading Coach
  • Maintain current knowledge of formatting style requirements such as MLA and APA
  • Cross refer students to other Learning Commons coaching centers and academic support workshops as needed an appropriate
  • Lead Academic Support Workshops in classes and in the Learning Commons when appropriate and assigned by the Coordinator, Academic Support
  • Assist in other areas of the Learning Commons as needed and appropriate
  • Work with the Director, Coordinator, and other Learning Commons staff to develop meaningful evaluations of services and use data to inform decision making processes
  • Assist in monitoring the proper usage of the Learning Commons space
  • Follow Learning Commons policies and ensure students are adhering to policies
  • Perform other duties as assigned that support the College mission and initiatives
  • Promote College mission, vision and values

ADA Summary:

ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information and exercise good judgment in the collection, evaluation and analysis of data and student assessment, curriculum development, and program review; ease of mobility in supervising students in the clinical and classroom settings, carrying equipment, supplies and other instructional materials; travel between campus locations may be required; and effective use of all forms of communication including use of computers.

Salary Range: 

$18.00 - $20.44 per hour based on candidate's experience, education, and the state budget.
