Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in education, STEM, English, composition, or related field 
  • Two years of experience tutoring middle and/or high school students in core content areas
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Access to means of transportation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in education, STEM, English, composition, or related field 
  • Experience teaching middle and/or high school students in core content areas
  • Experience working with individuals who are low income, first-generation, or who are otherwise at risk of dropping out of school
  • Overcome obstacles similar to those experienced by Talent Search participants
  • Fluency in Spanish

Summary:

 

The Part-Time Tutor, Talent Search is a grant funded position responsible for providing academic support in the areas of Science, Technology Engineering and Math (STEM), English, and composition for eligible Lexington and Thomasville City Schools 6th – 12th grade students. Some evening and Saturday tutoring may be required. The position reports to the Director, Talent Search and has the following responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides academic assistance and guidance to program participants 
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction
  • Interacts with students, families, and school personnel representing diverse backgrounds
  • Develops strong academic curriculums that benefits students and supports classroom instruction
  • Monitors and keeps daily logs of student attendance, behavior, and academic development
  • Develops and maintains class academic interactions and grade reports (mid-term & end-of-year)
  • Assesses student’s needs, monitors their performance, behaviors, and evaluates their progress
  • Provides a comprehensive written evaluation on each student enrolled in the classes taught
  • Ensures accuracy of data entry and updates academic information in student databases
  • Serves as a positive role model for the students and families
  • Participates in academic and staff meetings, as needed
  • Seeks opportunities to gain knowledge and implement tutoring strategies that helps students fulfill their potential
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of the school districts and the College

ADA Summary:

ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information and exercise good judgment; ease of mobility within the work environment and other areas of campus and College locations; travel between campus locations may be required; and effective use of all forms of communication (written, oral, visual, auditory), including use of computers.
