Required: Bachelor’s degree in guidance, counseling or related area. Commitment to the advancement of socially, economically, and educationally deprived populations. Specific knowledge of career counseling, educational opportunities, and financial aid.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in guidance, counseling or related area and/or experience with socially, economically, and educationally deprived populations. Experience with African American men and adolescents. Experience in higher education.
Under the supervision of the Project Director, the Learning Coach serves as primary point-of -contact for a prescribed caseload of participants providing support for all academic, personal, and social needs. Coaches are responsible for working one-on-one with program participants and providing customized services that support student engagement, academic progress, student development, financial, scholarship and retention.
Learning Coaches conduct individual and group counseling sessions, monitor academic performance and progress, track attendance, grades, test performance, midterm, and other performance indicators via early alert and grade reports. Conduct interviews, orientation, needs assessments, graduation plans, and facilitate workshops for students, administrators, faculty, and staff. Maintains real-time and accurate individual student records. Assist participants with exploring careers, career goals, and business, industry or 4-year transfer institution visits.
Learning Coaches conduct workshops pertaining to college survival skills, job readiness, student success, advising, registration, degree audits, professional development, financial aid, and scholarships. Coaches also assist with completing college and housing applications. Coaches also participate in staff and professional development activities.
Learning Coaches construct and report various performance outcomes for participants and assist with preparing newsletters, brochures, newspaper briefs, and publications pertaining to project activities. Coaches are responsible for forming new partnerships with churches, community agencies, adult education programs, businesses, and community organizations, etc., and serving on institutional and community committees. Coaches also perform other duties as assigned.
