Minimum Qualifications

Degree Requirements: 

Masters degree in Psychology or closely-related field required.  

If Masters is in a closely-related field, the applicant must have at least 18 graduate hours in Psychology.  

Experience: 

Experience teaching college-level psychology is required. Experience with using instructional technology is required.  Willingness to teach in both high school and college environments is a requirement. 
 
Knowledge of: 

  • Classroom instructional techniques and proce­dures. 
  • Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignment. 
  • Current trends, research, and development in the area of assignment. 
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping. 
  • Principles and techniques involved in curriculum and course development. 
  • Principles and techniques involved in test development. 
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regu­lations, as appropriate. 

Ability to: 

  • Participate in instructional programs suited to the community. 
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities. 
  • Participate in curriculum development. 
  • Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. 
  • Interpret and apply federal, state, and local policies, proce­dures, laws, and regulations. 
  • Maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others. 
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 

Other personal traits 

Must be a good team member and be willing to update skills as needed.  Must be able to work effectively with diverse student populations.  Educational philosophy must be compatible with the role of the community college and with best practices in education.

Preferred Qualifications

Licensure and certification in additional mental health areas is a plus.  Counseling licensure is a plus.   

Course work in the adolescent learner and the adult learner, course work in educational leadership, and course work in educational technology are all highly desirable. 

Experience working in a clinical or agency setting is desirable.

Experience teaching in both high school and college environments is a plus. 

Position Description

Examples of Duties

Provide classroom instruction to students. Prepare for each learning experience; prepare, maintain, and update lesson plan; develop and prepare methods to evaluate student performance; order supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons as appropriate. 

Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; proctor tests; grade and record individual scores. 

Provide individual assistance to students outside of the classroom as appropriate. 

Participate in development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and/or courses. 

Attend faculty meetings, staff meetings, and graduation ceremonies as required. 

Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance; maintain various records and databases according to program needs or accreditation require­ments, and submit reports according to policy. 

Maintain current knowledge in the appropriate academic fields; participate in staff develop­ment programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriate. 

Assist with and carry out, as required, the implementation of policies and procedures related to required instruction­al area. 

Communicate clearly, conscientiously, and in a caring manner with students. 

Participate on standing, ad hoc, or other institutional committees and activities as required. 

Participate as required in the development and operation of program advisory committees. 

Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate a variety of textbooks, films, and videos; select books and other materials to be used for assigned instructional classes. 

Participate in the orientation of new part-time and full-time faculty as needed. 

Maintain required office hours according to established policies. 

Other important duties and responsibilities 

Perform back-up instructional activities for other instructors as appropriate. 

Participate in the recruitment of students and/or promotion of college programs as appropriate in the teaching area. 

Interact with colleagues and students in a collegial and professional manner. 

Participate in a variety of student related administrative activities including reviewing admission requirements, program evaluation, student progress, and qualifications for graduation. 

Perform other duties as assigned. 

Environmental Conditions: 

Office environment; may periodically work irregular hours, including nights and possibly weekends. 
 
The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading. 
 
Physical Conditions: 

Frequent walking, standing, and sitting for prolonged periods of time. 
 
Frequent communications, verbal and written. 

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
