Minimum Qualifications

  • An Associate degree is required
  • Ability to relate to and communicate well with a variety of library users in a congenial and professional manner
  • Some knowledge of library resources preferred
  • Capacity to acquire a working knowledge of library techniques
  • Ability to keyboard with accuracy
  • Ability to keep simple records
  • Ability to coordinate with other library staff members

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of library experience is preferred

Position Description

Job Summary:
The Circulation Assistant is responsible for fulfilling daily activities at the circulation desk.  This position primarily involves application of standard library routines, circulation of library materials, and performance of related work as required. 

This position is 20 hours/week, candidate must have the ability to work a flexible schedule within operating hours.

Fall and Spring semester hours of operation are:
Monday-Thursday 7:30 AM-8 PM
Friday 7:30 AM-2 PM

Summer operating hours are determined around class schedules.

Knowledge & Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to learn and use the library automated software
  • Maintain proper circulation procedures and records for library materials and equipment
  • Check out/check in materials and equipment; file periodicals
  • Knowledge of North Carolina E-Procurement purchasing system
  • Prepare requisitions and order forms for books, equipment, and supplies
  • Prepare information for electronic ordering, using E-Procurement when possible
  • Check and confirm receipt of books and materials; check invoices, order forms, and shipping lists
  • Collect fines/fees and copy money
  • Instruct and assist patrons in locating, evaluating, and accessing print/non-print resources, the Internet, and electronic resources
  • Answer general reference questions; assist patrons in the use of reference materials and indexes
  • Copy audiotapes and videocassettes to CD when requested by faculty or students
  • Process books (stamp, attach labels, security tags, barcodes, attach covers)
  • Make minor book repairs
  • Direct the preparation and distribution of notices for overdue library materials; prepare "overdue list" for Datatel
  • Maintain scrapbook/newspaper clippings of MCC events, organizations, and faculty/staff
  • Collecting books and daily newspapers from book deposit box each morning; distribute newspapers
  • Pull, assemble, and display books and other resource materials for special events or dates and create/assemble bibliographies for these; maintain bulletin boards
  • Deliver outgoing mail; pick up and deliver incoming mail
  • Copy materials for the Speech and Language Pathology classes
  • Assist other staff with work assignments when requested
  • Ability to be flexible with regard to hours; some evening hours are required
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Related Responsibilities:  

  • Participate in book selection
  • Perform minor maintenance on equipment; replace bulbs; load paper in copier and microfilm reader/printer
