Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in education, administration, counseling or a related field 
  • Two years of experience counseling/advising youth
  • Experience working with individuals who are low-income, first-generation, or who are otherwise at risk
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct workshops, field trips, and educational activities
  • Knowledge of college and university admission and enrollment procedures
  • Knowledge of federal and state financial aid
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and database management
  • Willingness to work some evening and weekend hours
  • Effectiveness in the following College organizational competencies:
         o   Translating College purpose, values, and vision into organizational action 
         o   Collaborating and facilitating 
         o   Creating and innovating 
         o   Anticipating and responding to change 
         o   Providing vision and leadership

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with federal Department of Education programs or TRiO Programs. 
  • Work experience with North Carolina’s public schools and community organizations
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Work experience in a college setting
  • Experience with Blumen and/or PowerSchool database
  • Personally overcome obstacles similar to those experienced by Talent Search program participants

Position Description

The Student Success Advisor, Talent Search provides academic, personal, financial, and career counseling to middle and high school students in support of them completing a secondary school diploma, enrolling and completing a postsecondary credential.  This is a full-time, 12-month positions funded by a five year U.S. Department of Education grant and will be located at Thomasville City Schools.  The positions report to the Director, Talent Search, and has the following responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with the Director, Talent Search, Thomasville School administrators, teachers, and counselors to identify program participants in middle and high schools and execute a comprehensive program to improve high school persistence, graduation, and postsecondary enrollment to completion 
  • Conducts recruitment, outreach, and advising strategies for middle school and high school participants in support of academic success, grade promotion, and college readiness
  • Completes individual needs assessments and works with students to develop customized, individual College, Career, and Academic Plans (CCAPs); reviews report cards, transcripts, and other student academic reports 
  • Meets one-on-one with students and families to discuss academic and non-academic obstacles, monitoring student progress to provide appropriate resources for success
  • Assists students with obtaining academic tutorial services, including scheduling study skills workshops and activities each semester; collaborates with tutors
  • Monitors program participants’ academic records, attendance records and disciplinary records.
  • Advises and mentors participants, promoting the development of positive self-concept and helping students envision futures beyond high school.
  • Delivers workshops and communicates with families to increase student success
  • Provides coordination for and leads student-centered college and university exploratory field trips, enrichment activities, and cultural events
  • Assists students with career exploration, aptitude assessment and selecting postsecondary programs; provides assistance with secondary and post-secondary course selection
  • Assists students and families in completing college admissions and financial aid applications and preparing for college entrance exams and/or admissions requirements
  • Participates in middle and high school team meetings to review timelines, discuss objectives, refine implementation plans, and problem-solve
  • Maintains participant files, tracks services, and submits reports as required by the grant
  • Participates in professional development appropriate to the functions of the position, including state Talent Search meetings/conferences and Department of Education sponsored training
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of the College, City Schools, and the Talent Search grant
  • Perform other duties as assigned which support the purpose and initiatives of the College

ADA Summary:

ADA requirements for this position include critical thinking skills with the ability to process information and exercise good judgment; ease of mobility within the work environment and other areas of campus and College locations; travel between campus locations may be required; and effective use of all forms of communication including use of computers.

Salary Range: 

$28,003 - $36,000 based on candidate's experience, education, and funding source availability
