Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in education, administration, counseling or a related field
  • Minimum of two years of experience with college planning, financial aid, education, community outreach or related field
  • Demonstrate ability to plan and conduct workshops, field trips, and educational activities
  • Knowledge of college and university admission and enrollment procedures
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, and database management
  • Willingness to work some evening and weekend hours
  • Effectiveness in the following College organizational competencies:
         o   Translating College purpose, values, and vision into organizational action 
         o   Collaborating and facilitating 
         o   Creating and innovating 
         o   Anticipating and responding to change 
         o   Providing vision and leadership

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in education, administration, counseling or a related field

  • Personally overcome obstacles similar to those experienced by Upward Bound program participants

SUMMARY:

The Student Success Advisor, Upward Bound provides academic, personal, financial, and career counseling to Central and West Davidson High School students in support of them completing a secondary school diploma, enrolling and completing a postsecondary credential.  This full-time, 12-month position is funded by a five year U.S. Department of Education grant.  The position reports to the Director, Upward Bound, and has the following responsibilities:
 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works with low income, first generation, or academically disadvantaged high school students to help them develop the skills needed to become successful college students
  • Works closely with the Director, Upward Bound, Davidson County Schools administrators, teachers, and counselors to identify program participants at Central and West Davidson High Schools and executes a comprehensive program to improve high school persistence, graduation, and postsecondary enrollment to completion
  • Recruits, accepts referrals and helps select Upward Bound participants by making presentations to classes in targeted schools and parents describing program benefits
  • Delivers advising strategies and workshops for high school participants in support of academic success, grade promotion, and college readiness
  • Assists students in the development of appropriate educational goals, guiding them in decision-making and learning how to accept responsibility for their decisions
  • Completes individual needs assessments and works with students to develop customized, individual College, Career, and Academic Plans (CCAPs); reviews report cards, transcripts, and other student academic reports
  • Meets one-on-one with students and families to discuss academic and non-academic obstacles, monitoring student progress to provide appropriate resources for success
  • Assists students with obtaining academic tutorial services, including scheduling study skills workshops and activities each semester; collaborates with tutors
  • Monitors program participants' academic records, academic progress, attendance records, and disciplinary records
  • Advises and mentors participants, promoting the development of positive self-concept and helping students envision futures beyond high school.
  • Delivers workshops and communicates with families to increase student success
  • Provides coordination for and leads student-centered college and university exploratory field trips, enrichment activities, and cultural events
  • Plans and participates in the annual summer camp for Upward Bound students in collaboration with the Director, Upward Bound
  • Assists students with career exploration, aptitude assessment and selecting postsecondary programs; provides assistance with secondary and post-secondary course selection
  • Assists students and families in completing college admissions and financial aid applications and preparing for college entrance exams and/or admissions requirements
  • Attends and participates in high school team meetings, integrating into Central and West Davidson High Schools
  • Maintains participant files, tracks services, and submits reports as required by the grant
  • Collaborates with the program director in creating effective programming to meet the goals and objectives of the Upward Bound program as outlined in the grant
  • Participates in professional development appropriate to the functions of the position, including state Upward Bound meetings/conferences and Department of Education sponsored training
  • Maintains sensitivity, understanding and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of the College, City Schools, and the Upward Bound grant
