  • Six years of increasingly responsible experience in college instruction, including at least three years in an administrative or management position

Position Description

Position Summary

Under limited supervision the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Chief Academic Officer (CAO) plans, directs and reviews the activities and operations of the college academic functions including instructional programs and curriculum development and compliance; provides information to the Board of Trustees; coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies; provides leadership for the division. Exercises supervision over instructional, professional, technical, and clerical staff. Position reports directly to the President.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise Academic Divisions, Equine, Distance Learning, Scholars of Global Distinction Program, and Career and College Promise 
  • Manage and participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities for assigned programs; evaluate and ensure that operations meet the mission of the college and the needs of the student population; recommend appropriate services and staffing levels, and policies and procedures
  • Direct, manage, and participates in the review of curriculum programs; ensure curriculum compliance; review and evaluate existing programs; make recommendations to preserve the quality of education
  • Develop and coordinate the division budget; direct the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; implement adjustments when needed
  • Direct, oversee, and participate in the development of instructional program work plans; assign work activities, projects, and programs; monitor workflows; review and evaluate work products, methods, and procedures
  • Participate in the selection of staff and faculty; provide or coordinate staff and faculty orientation in Academic Affairs; evaluate employee performance; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures
  • Identify opportunities for improving service delivery methods and procedures
  • Supervise, initiate, and coordinate mutual agreements for support with other community colleges and public schools
  • Supervise and review curriculum content through the Curriculum Committee; provide advice and counsel regarding curriculum; oversee the initiation and maintenance of program certification
  • Coordinate professional development offerings for faculty
  • Coordinate faculty advising processes, systems, and professional development
  • Oversee the Curriculum Committee, participating as active chair or assigning the active chair; supervises and reviews curriculum content with the Curriculum Committee; provides advice and counsel regarding curriculum; oversees the initiation and maintenance of program certification; presents approval items pertaining to curriculum content to President’s Council and the Board of Trustees
  • Oversee upkeep and editing of the College Catalog
  • Manage the Carl D. Perkins grant and oversee the completion of grant activities, CLNA, budget, and local plan
  • Directly manage and carry out activities for grants awarded to the Academic Affairs division or assigned to the division by the President to ensure compliance with grantor’s expectations and reporting. Manage grant budget. Submit all grantor reports by the reported due dates. Collaborate across campus divisions to carry out grant activities and to ensure accurate reporting
  • Participate in higher learning accreditation, NC System Office, and NCACCIA professional development opportunities as well as others identified by the President to stay abreast of best practices to assist in maintaining a relevant and competitive MCC Academic Affairs division
  • Participate within the community as a representative of the College on local boards and initiatives that align with the College’s mission and strategic plan; interact with local, regional, and state legislators for the support of the College and community
  • Coordinate and conduct orientation for adjunct faculty; participate in college orientation for new Academic Affairs employees, students, and Board of Trustees as needed
  • Participate in SACSCOC accreditation and/or reaffirmation by appropriate accreditation bodies
  • Participate in pre-registration and registration activities
  • Provide staff support to and serve on a variety of boards and committees
  • Other duties as assigned
