Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree
• Experience working in higher education
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in educational leadership, higher education administration, counseling, or related field.
• Spanish Bilingual
• Minimum of 1 year experience in academic advising, four-year transfer, career counseling, or a related student support role in a higher education setting
• Experience working in a community college
• Experience working with a student information systems (SIS), such as Datatel/Colleague or Banner.

Job Description

The Academic Advisor is a full-time, 12-month staff position located on both the OCH and LLP Campus in Monroe, NC and Polkton, NC. Under the direction of the Director of Academic Advising, the Academic Advisor works within the College’s advising centers to assists all student populations with program exploration and selection, guides students on course selection, monitors progress towards the fulfillment of academic goals and requirements, creates individualized student graduation plans, and assists students with registering for classes.

Job Duties

• Advise and register first-time and returning students, both walk-in and by appointment.
• Provide academic advising to distance learners via phone and online.
• Interpret testing results relevant to placement decisions.
• Advise and assist students seeking admission into health programs with application planning.
• Advise and register high school students in compliance with the North Carolina Career and College Promise regulations both on and off-site.
• Audit, monitor, and evaluate individual student academic progress.
• Create college completion and graduation plans.
• Document student advising sessions utilizing campus retention software.
• Educate students about course planning and registration processes both individually and in groups.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge about the College’s programs and requirements; consults with contacts at various transfer institutions regarding course and program transferability, admission and graduation requirements.
• Make appropriate referrals to campus resources for students perceived as at-risk.
• Provide support to students accessing college technology accounts such as the campus portal, email, and Moodle.
• Provide academic advising front desk support as needed.
• Assist with monitoring and assigning faculty advising loads.
• Participate in student retention activities such as student workshops and new student orientation session.
• Create and manage databases and spreadsheets that support the operations of the department as well as generate necessary reports.
• Attend professional development trainings.
• Ensure compliance with FERPA, state law and community college system regulations and college policies and procedures
• Work variable schedule as needed, including evenings and/or weekends as well as off-site locations.
• Participate in SPCC teams as requested
• Perform other duties as assigned.
