Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required in Education, Counseling, STEM, Health Sciences, Humanities, or related field, and
  • Two years of experience teaching, tutoring, or advising low-income, first-generation students and/or students with disabilities, preferably at the college level;
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of collegiate procedures and best practices for promoting retention, academic success, and graduation of college students;
  • Ability to effectively plan and implement program activities and services;
  • Ability to assist students with course selection, financial aid, achieving academic success, preparing for university transfer, and career readiness;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport with first-generation, low-income students and/or students with disabilities and willingness to advocate on their behalf within the college community;
  • Ability to work as an effective part of a team;
  • Ability to make effective presentations to a variety of audiences;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to utilize technology effectively; 
  • Experience fostering and maintaining positive and collaborative relationships with other on-campus departments and staff;
  • Strong work ethic, trustworthiness, and effective communication skills to enable productive and effective work in an unsupervised environment;
  • Understanding and respect for the diverse backgrounds of students, staff, and college community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a community college;
  • Familiarity with STEM and Health Sciences undergraduate programs and careers;
  • Knowledge of and experience specifically with TRiO or SSS services, objectives, and regulations;
  • Experience training and supervising instructors or tutors;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Experience with Blumen or Datatel as data management systems or Aviso Coaching software;
  • Personal experience overcoming academic, cultural, financial, or other obstacles similar to those faced by low-income or first-generation students or students with disabilities participating in the Student Support Services program.

The Student Support Services Academic Coach provides programmatic and direct student support for the Student Support Services program which operates in Chatham, Harnett, and Lee Counties.

Essential Duties

 

  • Assist with student recruitment, review of application, interviews, and enrollment process;
  • Accompany and supervise students on cultural enrichment trips (including overnight trips);
  • Coordinate administration of NCDAP test for all new students immediately after entry and review academic history, college transcript (if available), and current course load prior to each participant's initial meeting with staff;
  • Develop a College Success Plan (CSP) with each new participant, including a checklist of recommended services and a timeline for completion and share CSPs with other SSS staff for review and action;
  • Follow an intrusive advising process with an Appreciative Advising approach;
  • Monitor early alerts from Aviso Coaching software for all participants, as well as SSS attendance reports and notes for Supplemental Instruction, tutoring, workshops, and meetings with staff, intervening as necessary and providing positive reinforcement when possible;
  • Assist students in communicating effectively with faculty, encouraging them to self-advocate and contacting faculty directly as needed;
  • Act as referral source for tutoring and personal counseling needs;
  • Assist participants with course selection and registration prior to the beginning of each semester;
  • Ensure that all students meet with a member of the SSS staff and/or are served at least three times per semester, and that CSPs are updated each semester;
  • Assist in development and maintenance of active social media accounts and updating of program website;
  • Document all contacts and services electronically and in student files, maintaining confidentiality of student data;
  • Meet weekly with other SSS staff to discuss achievements and concerns of the program and individual students, and implement program modifications for improvement, if necessary;
  • Report monthly to Director of Student Support Services;
  • Assist in recruitment and hiring of Supplemental Instruction Leaders and tutors, coordinate all instructional and tutoring sessions, and monitor student participation and performance;
  • Facilitate workshops for students focused on academic skill-building;
  • Plan and implement visits to 4-year colleges and universities to expose participants to transfer opportunities and inform them of requirements and procedures of the college transfer process;
  • Assist Director of Student Support Services with administration of SSS supplemental grant aid program;
  • Assist in planning of annual Graduation Banquet for program graduates and their families;
  • Contribute to program newsletter and informal and formal reports of program outcomes;
  • Collaborate with college administrators, faculty, and staff to promote retention, graduation, and 4-year transfer of all Student Support Services - STEM & Health Sciences participants, including possibly serving on  Academic Advising, Academic Policy, Financial Aid, Scholarship, or Student Engagement and Learning committees;
  • Engage with other TRiO staff members to provide formative assessment and continuous improvement of program delivery;
  •  Attends meetings, conferences and seminars (State, Local and National including overnight stays) related to programs mission and goals (up to 20 days annually);
  • Travel to service clients at Harnett Campus and Chatham Campus is required weekly;
  • Complete the annual five-hour staff development requirement;
  • Follow and support College activities, policies, and procedure;.
  • Serve on College committees as assigned;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
