Minimum Qualifications

Requires an Associate’s degree in education, computer science, or related field with at least one year of tutoring, teaching, or the equivalent, preferably in an academic lab setting; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required ability, knowledge, and skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to operate a variety of computer equipment and machines such as computers, printers, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to twenty-five pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to fifty pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work.  Position involves walking, standing, stooping and kneeling for periods of time.  Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of approximately fifty pounds.

Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability of speaking and signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the receiving of work assignments and instructions from supervisor.

Language Ability:  Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, and computer manuals. Requires the ability to prepare production reports, records, etc., using the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Requires the ability to communicate with poise, voice control, and confidence.  

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Requires the ability to apply influence systems in managing a staff; to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.  Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions; to teach and counsel employees.  Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with persons using computer and other terminology.

Numerical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to utilize mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time.  Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion. 

Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.

Motor Coordination:  Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using office machinery; to operate motor vehicles.

Manual Dexterity:  Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, etc.  Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity:  Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.

Interpersonal Temperament:  Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.

Position Description

Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical work in the planning, development, and operations of the TASC lab. Work involves overseeing the daily operation of the laboratory by providing support to students using computer equipment and software applications, generating detailed and accurate reports for other administrative units, and providing basic maintenance of computers. Reports to the Senior Director of Developmental Education & Academic Support.

Assists students using TASC computer lab; answers questions about software, operation of equipment, and troubleshoots problems.

Manages day-to-day operations and utilization of the TASC laboratory.

Works closely with instructors; informs instructors of questions being asked; customizes supplemental computer-based instruction.

Builds rapport with students to continue and further their motivation to learn.

Provides tutoring for students requiring additional assistance.

Maintains records of computer usage, student attendance and progress, and hardware/software configurations and problems.  Promotes TASC laboratory services.  Upgrades skills and knowledge as technology and curriculum programs change.

Provides basic maintenance and troubleshooting of computers; notifies Information Technology Department when assistance is required.  Directs and oversees activities of laboratory assistants.  Monitors user satisfaction; proposes methods for improving services.  Composes information and correspondence for recruitment and retention of students.

Recommends materials and equipment for enhancing service offerings; develops departmental policies and procedures in collaboration with coordinators and Senior Director.

Participates in service to the college, as assigned by supervisor, such as serving on college committees, participating in campus activities and professional organizations.  Attends staff meetings as required by supervisor.

Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as time-sheets, individual education plans, job applications, attendance records, schedules, and student referrals.

Refers to employee manual, North Carolina Administrative Code software manuals, individualized education plans, policy and procedure manuals, laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.

Operates a variety of office equipment and machinery such as computer, etc.  Uses a variety of supplies such as computer supplies, general office supplies, etc.; and a variety of computer software such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Microsoft PowerPoint, TutorTrac, etc.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Senior Director, Developmental Education & Academic Support, tutor coordinators, students, instructors, co-workers, subordinates, and the general public.  Requests supplies as needed for activities.

Performs general administrative/office duties as required, including typing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, establishing and maintaining filing systems, etc.  Performs other related duties as required.

Collaborates with appropriate Business Division representatives to facilitate a Student Resource Center for CIS courses.
