Minimum Qualifications

A minimum of a Bachelors' degree in English, a Bachelors’ degree in Writing, Bachelors’ degree in Reading or a closely related field is required. Demonstrated mastery of the subject matter in which they are qualified to teach.  Two to three years’ work-related experience in an educational setting. Prior experience working with first-generation, low-income and disabled students is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Physical Requirements:   Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated machines including telephone, computer, copier, calculator, etc.  Must be physically able to exert up to twenty-five pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work; position requires walking, standing, climbing, stooping, reaching, etc. for brief periods of time.   Must be able to lift weights of up to fifty pounds.

 

Data Conception:   Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

 

Interpersonal Communication:   Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.  Includes the giving of assignments and instructions to assistants, etc.  Includes the giving and receiving of information and instructions from the President.

 

Language Ability:   Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, and books such as various manuals, building codes, general statutes, budget ordinance, maps, etc.  Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, etc.  Has the ability to speak with poise, voice control and confidence.

 

Intelligence:   Has the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.  Is able to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Has the ability to apply principles of rational systems such as accounting, mechanics, personnel, engineering, and legal systems, etc., in order to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.

Verbal Aptitude:   Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.

 

Numerical Aptitude:   Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers; utilize decimals; figure percentages; apply algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric principles; utilize descriptive statistics; and utilize linear and quadratic programming; etc.

 

Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

 

Motor Coordination:   Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office and other equipment.

Knowledge of Job:  Must be able to effectively communicate with people from varied social, educational, and economic backgrounds. Must be able to generate reports and presentations using various types of computer programs, and word processing applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc. Must be able to integrate the learning style preferences of SSSP participants in the plan for the delivery of instructions. Must have the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Quality of Work:  Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.  Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility.  Maintains high quality communication and interaction with all College departments and divisions, co-workers and the public.

Planning:  Plans, directs and uses information effectively in order to enhance activities and production of the Administrative Services Operations.  Knows and understands the expectations of the College regarding the activities of the Administrative Services Operations and works to see that these expectations are met.  Designs and formulates ways, means, and timing to achieve the goals and objectives of the Administrative Services Operations and the College.  Within the constraints of College policy, formulates the appropriate strategy and tactics for achieving Administrative Services Operations and College objectives.  Organizes, arranges and allocates manpower, financial and other designated resources in an efficient and effective way so as to achieve the goals and objectives of the Administrative Services Operations and the College.

 

Organizing:  Organizes own work and that of subordinate staff well.  Ensures that staff members know what results are expected of them and that they are regularly and appropriately informed of all College and Administrative Services Operations' matters affecting them and/or of concern to them.

 

Staffing:  Works with the Personnel Department to select and recommend employment of personnel for the Administrative Services Operations who are qualified both technically and philosophically to meet the needs of the Administrative Services Operations and College.  Personally, directs the development and training of departmental managers in order to  ensure that  they are properly inducted, oriented and trained.

 

Leading: Provides a work environment which encourages clear and open communications. Has a clear and comprehensive understanding of the principles of effective leadership and how such principles are to be applied.  Provides adequate feed?back to administrative services managers so that they know whether their  performance levels are satisfactory.  Commends and rewards employees for outstanding performance yet does not hesitate to take disciplinary action when necessary.  Exercises enthusiasm in influencing and guiding others toward the achievement of College goals and objectives.

Policy Formulation:  Keeps abreast of changes in operating philosophies and policies of the College and continually reviews Administrative Services Operations' policies in order to ensure that any changes in College philosophy or practice are appropriately incorporated.  Also understands the relationship of operating policies and practices with morale and performance of all institutional personnel.  Works to see that established policies enhance same.

 

 

Position Description

The Academic Specialist, TRIO: Student Support Services (SSS) will work in collaboration with the Program Coordinator and the Director of TRIO Programs to develop, plan, and implement support services which result in increased academic performance, persistence, and completion.  Additionally, this position will identify participants’ tutoring needs as well as tutor in academic subjects (English, Writing, Reading, and Communication specifically). Overall, the incumbent will provide learning strategies, instruction, academic and personal support to SSS participants; monitors participants' progress; assists in the identification and selection of tutors; maintains participants' records; and submits weekly reports of participants' progress while enrolled in tutoring. This position will also be responsible for teaching 1 developmental English course per semester (Fall and Spring). In addition, this position requires an understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion with the ability view programs and services from an equity lens. This position reports to the Director, TRIO Programs.

  • Coordinate and manage tutorial  services including interviewing tutors and making recommendations for hire to the Director, TRIO Programs. 
  • Identify participants tutorial needs utilizing a variety of assessment tools and strategies. 
  • Tutor participants in all facets of reading, writing and general education courses as needed. 
  • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert, in the development and facilitation of  academic workshops, including, but not limited to English, Writing and Reading. 
  • Mentor and advise a diverse group of participants inclusive of first-generation, low-income, and disabled populations.
  • Ability to use technology to enhance programming and service delivery
  • Maintains compliance with federal regulations governing the project. Ensures that all participants meet federal guidelines for program participation.
  • Ability to utilize Management Information Systems (i.e. Blumen, Aviso, Datatel, TRIO Dashboard, etc.) to make informed decisions.
  • Coordinate and participate in TRiO sponsored events as assigned.  
  • Teach 1 Developmental English course per semester (Fall and Spring) and offer supplemental instruction to participants enrolled in the course.
  • Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet the diverse needs of students. 
  • Encourage the development of communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate assignments. 
  • Ability to network and collaborate with campus stakeholders in support of the program’s goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, often ambitious/demanding environment while maintaining agreed upon work schedules and deliverables.
  • Serve on various committees as assigned. 
  • Performs related duties as directed.
