Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Three years’ experience in an academic setting
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining a student-centered and effective working relationship with students, faculty, staff and the public; commitment to a team building approach
  • Ability to think “outside of the box” and embrace change
  • Ability to communicate effectively, skilled in presenting ideas and concepts orally and in writing
  • Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, statistical and web page functions

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution

Position Description

GENERAL FUNCTION:      

Under the supervision of the Dean of Academic Support, the Male Mentoring Coach supports the College’s student success initiatives by providing mentoring, advising, and counseling services to students.  The Male Mentoring Coach increases the minority male utilization of campus services through deliberate and intentional interactions between students and the campus community.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement targeted outreach to minority male students in new student orientation, academic success courses, summer bridge programs, and through academic advising
  • Design and implement mentoring interactions for first-year minority males that address student success characteristics such as personal validation, self-efficacy, a sense of purpose, active involvement, social interaction, and reflective thinking
  • Provides academic counseling by assisting students in setting and achieving academic and life goals
  • Assists students to developing and monitor academic progress
  • Participate in instructing for Student Success Strategies, Success and Study Skills, and/or College Transfer Success courses and their associated labs as needed.  Prepare, administrator, and grade; maintain records of student attendance as required by BCC; mentors students for personal and academic success
  • Participate in providing professional development for faculty and staff on student success strategies, student learning, and engagement
  • Utilizes technology effectively to monitor students’ progress toward goal/degree completion documenting student interactions
  • Leads and serve as the primary advisor to the Student Government Association, supervises the student executive board and provides oversight support for all meeting and club functions
  • Participates in open house and orientation activities, including evening, weekend events
  • Participates in college-wide and services, events, and activities to promote the growth of the college
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains knowledge of current trends
  • Serves on committees related to academic support, advising, and success as needed
  • Performs other related duties as required
