Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or Mathematics related field is required.

Or

 Bachelor's degree with 18 semester hours in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a Mathematics related field is required.

Or

A Bachelor's degree in Education and three years of teaching experience in Mathematics or graduate training in remedial Education are required.  

Two- three years of experience working with low-income/first-generation and disabled students; excellent writing and oral communication skills.  Demonstrated mastery in mathematical concepts and familiarity with computer-aided math is highly desired.

Preferred Qualifications

Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines including computer, typewriter, calculator, copier, etc.  Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Position involves sedentary work, which requires sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.  Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of approximately twenty pounds.

 

Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

 

Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.  Includes the giving of instructions to students and the giving of assignments to assistants.  Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.

 

Language Ability:  Requires the ability to read a variety of documents and reports. Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports such as pre-registration/registration lists, ineligible programs list, general financial aid recipient report, detailed financial aid reports, program review report, etc., using the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar.  Requires the ability to communicate with co-workers, other College personnel, students, personnel from other colleges, etc., with poise, voice control, and confidence.

 

Intelligence:  Has the ability to apply rational systems such as accounting, counseling, personnel, etc., in order to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.

 

Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.

 

Numerical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages and decimals; determine time and weight; apply algebraic principles; and apply descriptive statistics.

 

Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

 

Motor Coordination:  Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in utilizing automated office equipment.

 

Manual Dexterity:  Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.  Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

 

Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity:  Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.

 

Interpersonal Temperament:  Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.

 

Physical Communication:  Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)

Knowledge of Job:  Has thorough knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Student Development Services Division as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Financial Aid Assistant. Has knowledge of the principles, procedures, and practices of the College as they pertain to duties of the position. Has comprehensive knowledge of rules, regulations, and guidelines governing various loans and grants, and is able to ensure that all are adhered to in processing applications for same. Has considerable knowledge of accounting practices and procedures as they apply to the position.  Has considerable knowledge of computer and other specialized equipment used in the performance of responsibilities. Has knowledge of the necessary forms and records to be prepared, reviewed, and maintained. Is able to prepare, review, and maintain necessary forms in an accurate and organized manner.  Has good human relations skills. Position Description

The Academic and Support Specialist will collaborate with the Program Coordinator and the Director of TRIO Programs to develop, plan, and implement support services that result in increased academic performance, persistence, and completion.  The Academic and Support Specialist will provide learning strategies, instruction, and academic and personal support to TRIO: SSS participants. This position will be responsible for teaching one Developmental Math course per semester (Fall and Spring).  Additionally, the incumbent must understand equity, diversity, and inclusion with the ability to view programs and services from an equitable lens. Reports to the Director of TRIO Programs.  This position is 50% Federally Funded and 50% State Funded. 

Federally Funded 

  • Identify participants' tutorial needs utilizing a variety of assessment tools and strategies. 
  • Tutor participants in all facets of Math and General Education courses as needed. 
  • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert in the development and facilitation of academic workshops, including but not limited to Math, English, and Study skills.
  • Coordinate and participate in TRIO-sponsored events as assigned 
  • Mentor and advise a diverse group of participants, inclusive of first-generation, low-income, and disabled populations.
  • Utilize technology to enhance programming and service delivery
  • Maintain compliance with federal regulations governing the program to ensure all participants meet federal guidelines for program participation.
  • Utilize Management Information Systems (i.e., Blumen, Aviso, Datatel, TRIO Dashboard, etc.) to make informed decisions.
  • Provide detailed data-collection, record keeping, and reporting on Math related outcomes for program participants. 
  • Ability to network and collaborate with campus stakeholders to support the program's goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, often ambitious/demanding environment while maintaining agreed-upon work schedules and deliverables.
  • Serve on various committees as assigned. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

State Funded

  • Teach 1 Developmental Math course per semester (Fall and Spring) 
  • Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet the diverse needs of students. 
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate theories of the field or discipline taught
  • Encourage the development of communication and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate assignments. 
  • Employ equitable teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students and maximize student learning outcomes
  • Stay current in the subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, and workshops.
  • Ability to provide high-touch outreach and development to students who identify as first-generation.  In addition, to promoting and organizing educational opportunities, mentorship, social interaction, health and wellness, and cultural events.
