Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution
• Possession of or working towards a NCCCS-recognized College and Career Readiness teaching credential (New hires will have up to two years from hire date to complete a teaching credential)
• Minimum of one (1) year teaching experience
• Experience developing lesson plans
• Experience using Microsoft Office programs
Preferred Qualifications
• NCCCS-recognized College and Career Readiness teaching credential
• Minimum of one (1) year teaching experience in a correctional facility
• Minimum of one (1) year teaching adult learners
• Experience developing ABE/HSE curriculum
• Advanced degree (masters level or higher) from a regionally accredited institution
Position Description
Job Description
The Adult Basic Education/High School Equivalency (ABE/HSE) Instructor position is a full-time, 12-month position located at the Anson Correctional Institution (Close/Medium Women’s Correctional Facility) in Polkton, NC. Under the direction of the Correctional Adult Basic Skills Programs Coordinator, the ABE/HSE Instructor will be responsible for assisting incarcerated adult learners with acquiring the academic and life skills necessary to achieve a high school equivalency diploma and to transition to post-secondary training opportunities. Instructor focus will also include assisting those learners who are eligible with acquiring the skills necessary to effectively transition post-release into employment and/or post-secondary educational opportunities.
Job Duties
• Provide research-based educational opportunities for adult learners with diverse educational needs
• Develop lesson plans aligned to the NCCCS College and Career Readiness Adult Education Content Standards
• Contextualize educational opportunities to include employability and soft skills development
• Develop an understanding of best practices related to Adult Basic Skills programs and transitioning elements
• Pursue professional development and share expertise and best practices within the college, locally and at the state level, when appropriate
• Cultivate a collegial, collaborative environment
• Demonstrate a positive and proactive approach in identifying problems, creating innovative solutions, and managing projects
• Maintain required paperwork and adhere to program deadlines
• Adhere to departmental and institutional policies and procedures
• Adhere to correctional institution policies and procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Correctional Adult Basic Skills Programs Coordinator, Dean of the School of College & Career Readiness, and the Vice-President of Academic Affairs.
