Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, sociology, or closely related field OR equivalent two years of professional experience, preferably in a community college environment or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  

Preferred Qualifications

Information Technology Requirements:  Must be able to operate a computer equipped with such software as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, SPSS, Microsoft Project specialized decision science software, etc.  Able to use Outlook email and conduct research on the Internet. Operate a variety of specialized equipment such as laser and color printer, computer projection device, fax machine, photocopier, telephone, etc.


Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated machines including telephone, computer, copier, calculator, etc.  Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Position involves mostly sedentary work, but may require walking or standing for brief periods of time.  


Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.


Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability to speak to and/or signal to people in order to convey or exchange information.  Includes the giving of assignments and instructions to assistants.  Includes the receiving of information and instructions from campus administration.


Language Ability:  Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, books, manuals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, etc. Requires the ability to speak with poise, voice control and confidence.


Intelligence:   Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; and to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.  Is able to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems in order to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.


Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.


Numerical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers; utilize decimals; figure percentages; apply algebraic principles; and utilize descriptive and inferential statistics.


Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.


Motor Coordination:  Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated equipment.


Manual Dexterity:  Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, computer, calculator, control knobs, switches, etc.  Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.


Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity:  Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.


Interpersonal Temperament:  Requires the ability to relate to and deal with people in situations beyond receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with an emergency.


Physical Communication:  Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.) 



The work performance of supervisory personnel of Pitt Community College is routinely evaluated according to the performance criteria outlined herein: 


Knowledge of Job: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the advisement process, the Adult Learning Center, and regulations of the College as they apply to duties of the position. Has considerable knowledge of Colleague/Datatel, general office operations, functions, and procedures. Uses sound judgment and makes educated decisions in routine and occasionally, non-routine situations. Communicates effectively with others, both in person and over the telephone, in a clear and pleasant manner. Has the knowledge and intelligence required to communicate with all levels of staff, faculty, students, and the public in the performance of the job. Is able to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain an assortment of records, reports, and related information. Is able to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and office operations. Is able to read, understand and complete written requests and work assignments in a timely fashion. Has knowledge of how to estimate time, materials, and supplies required to complete various routine activities. Is able to learn and apply new skills needed in order to promote efficient completion of duties. Has good organizational and human relations skills. Is able to deal with emergency situations that may arise. Is able to operate a variety of office equipment and machines in completing tasks (i.e. fax, scanner, copier, multi-line phone, calculator, etc). Is able to work under stressful conditions related to handling confidential matters, organizing meetings, and handling problems that may arise. 


Quality of Work:  Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.  Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility.  Maintains high quality communication and interaction with all College departments and divisions, co-workers and the public.


Quantity of Work:  Performs described "Specific Duties and Responsibilities" and related assignments efficiently and effectively in order to produce quantity of work which consistently meets standards and expectations of the College.

Organizing:  Organizes own work and that of subordinate staff.  Ensures that staff members know what results are expected of them and that they are regularly and appropriately informed of all College and department matters affecting them and/or of concern to them.


Staffing:  Works with the Personnel Department to select and recommend employment of personnel for the department who are qualified both technically and philosophically to meet the needs of the department and College.  Personally directs the development and training of department personnel in order to ensure that they are properly inducted, oriented and trained.


Leading: Provides a work environment, which encourages clear and open communications. Has a clear and comprehensive understanding of the principles of effective leadership and how such principles are to be applied.  Provides adequate feed?back to staff so that they know whether their performance levels are satisfactory. Commends and rewards employees for outstanding performance yet does not hesitate to take disciplinary action when necessary. Exercises enthusiasm in influencing and guiding others toward the achievement of College goals and objectives.


Controlling:  Provides a work environment, which is orderly and controlled. Coordinates, audits, and controls manpower, financial resources and utilization of material and equipment efficiently and effectively. Position Description

Under general supervision, the Adult Learning Center (ALC) Assistant will provide assistance to current and potential adult learners who visit the center with various services including but not limited to answering both phone and in-person inquiries, assisting potential students with the admissions process, financial aid, guiding current students to their assigned advisors and other appropriate resources.  The ALC Assistant will work closely with the ALC Coordinator/Recruiter to help make sure the ALC is running smoothly and that all students are served.  Individuals in this position will be expected to work some nights and weekends and will be responsible for general knowledge about career and campus resources to support student success.  The Adult Learning Center Assistant will report directly to the Coordinator/Recruiter of the Adult Learning Center.

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this position.  

  • Assist Coordinator with the day-to-day operations of the Adult Learning Center (ALC)
  • Regular professional development trainings related to careers, academic planning, advising, financial aid and registration will be expected to become knowledgeable regarding PCC resources, Continuing Education/Workforce Development Programs and careers.  
  • Provide strong and effective support for the College’s Strategic Plan and Student Success Initiatives and provide assistance with meeting the goals and objectives of the Plan and Initiatives 
  • Assist the ALC Coordinator/Recruiter with general data entry and management, file management, student follow-up communication, planning and implementing adult learning activities and recruiting efforts.  
  • Maintain a database to assist and support adult learners, regularly checking academic progress and providing follow-up and follow-through when necessary
  • Utilize student retention data to make informed decisions regarding student success and advisement.  Collaborate with college personnel to develop advisement outcomes and plans for continuous improvement
  • Intervene, provide support and develop next steps for students facing academic problems or possible dismissal from a program
  • Adhere to PCC’s academic policies and procedures
  • Collaborate and support various Deans, Directors and Coordinators on campus to promote various campus programs
  • Provide referrals for services based upon individualized student needs.  Refers and connects students with relevant college resources.
  • Collaborate with Adult Learning Center, Enrollment Services, and other areas of the college to support student success initiatives and to provide Adult Learners with accurate and timely information to make informed and positive decisions
