Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates of Applied Science in Veterinary Medical Technology AND
  • Five years of licensed experience as an RVT or DVM.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine
  • Current license as a Registered Veterinary Technician or DVM, in the state of North Carolina, in good standing with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board
  • Five years of licensed experience as an RVT or DVM.
  • Proficiency in Microscoft Office
  • Experience in using Blackboard
  • Knowledge of Practice Management Software (Idexx Neo)

The Animal Facilities Manager position will have the primary role of regulatory compliance in an effort to ensure that facility and animal care requirements are met in the Veterinary Medical Technology program based on the Lee County campus.  Must be available outside of normal college hours in case of facility or animal emergencies.

Essential Duties

The Animal facilities manager shall be responsible for the following:

  • Maintain regulatory compliance of the animal facilities, and serve as the contact person, for the following agencies:
    • USDA – must serve on IACUC (PHS, OLAW)
      • Maintain organized records, inspection reports, and follow-ups
      • Develop and maintain IACUC protocols
    • OSHA-CDC guidelines plus safety
    • CVTEA
    • NC Veterinary Medical Board (NCVMB)
    • NC Radiation Protection (NCRP)
    • FDA
    • DEA
  • Coordinate all facilities operations and maintenance needs, as they pertain to regulatory compliance:
    • Coordinate with maintenance department
    • Serve as contact person for external facility stakeholders
  • Maintain practice management software
    • Work with program veterinarians to ensure records of colony animals are kept up to date and accurate.
    • Monitor colony animals for procedure counts in accordance with USDA regulations.
  • Colony Animal Care:
    • Work with stakeholders to maintain all animal housing areas in compliance with the Animal Care Act
    • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for the appropriate care of colony animals.
    • Work with program veterinarians to ensure colony animal procurement remains in compliance with USDA regulations.
    • Develop and maintain colony animal quarantine and isolation procedures
    • Work with clinical instructor(s) to coordinate colony animal usage within labs
    • Coordinate colony animal adoptions according to USDA regulations.
    • Work with program veterinarians to ensure all colony animals are up-to-date on required vaccines, spays/neuters, and other routine health procedures
    • Supervise animal care training
    • Maintain BlackBoard courses each semester to communicate with students regarding animal care issues and updates
    • Schedule students for animal care duty rotations
    • Develop and supervise student enrichment program for colony dogs and cats.
  • Inventory management (work with clinical coordinator as it pertains to the ordering and stocking of supplies needed for the animal facilities):
    • Feed
    • Cat litter
    • Cleaning supplies
    • Monitoring of expiration dates, food recalls
  • Equipment Control
    • Coordinate all equipment servicing
    • Serve as contact point for servicing companies
  • Supervise Kennel Assistants
    • Hire, train, and schedule each Spring
    • Update Kennel Assistant Job Description as needed
  • Perform light programmatic equipment maintenance within college and equipment warranty guidelines
  • Serve on College committees as assigned.
  • Complete the five-hour staff development requirement.
  • Encourage and support College activities, policies, procedures, and philosophies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
