Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Two (2) years' teaching experience, preferably at the post-secondary level.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Experience in Moodle and other open-source learning platforms and technologies.

Position Description

Occupational Summary

The Assistant Director of Distance Learning and Professional Development assists the Director with developing, coordinating and performing the responsibilities of the College's distance learning and professional development function, including daily operations of the department, providing oversight and critical support for essential services. This position actively participates in the planning and coordination of projects, activities and initiatives undertaken by the department and assists in the development and implementation of projects as assigned.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Provides vision and leadership for the Center for Teaching and Learning to develop professional development schedule, advertise offerings, and coordinate sessions
  • Teaches sessions on teaching and learning strategies, distance learning, Quality Matters, Moodle, and accessibility
  • Assists in program planning and facilitating meetings for Community of Online reDesigners (CORD)
  • Serves as a certified QM Peer Reviewer for the CORD program
  • Assists in the implementation of the ADA Compliance Plan and serves as the main point of contact for Craven's digital accessibility efforts
  • Works with the Director to design and develop accessibility training modules in Moodle for college employees to meet accessibility training requirements; coordinates training to meet the requirements of the ADA Compliance Plan
  • Assists in planning and leading meetings for the CTL, DL and ADA Committees
  • Collaborates with the Director on the vision and leadership for the quality and growth of online and hybrid courses and programs at the College
  • Works with the Director to design, develop, and update digital resources to support distance students including the DL Student Orientation, DL Student Handbook, Craven CC Online, and accessible syllabi
  • Assists in updating the DL Faculty Handbook, and Moodle support resources for faculty and staff including the Hybrid and Online Teacher Training (HOTT) courses and the Center for Teaching and Learning in Moodle
  • Assists in the administration of the LMS including Moodle upgrades, plugins, settings, integrations, testing and performance
  • Assists in writing and submitting NC SARA State Authorization renewal application, updating the state authorization information on the website, and reporting data on out-of-state students
  • Collaborates with academic deans and chairs to provide oversight and development of new distance learning programs and courses
  • Attends conferences and professional development to maintain up-to-date knowledge and expertise regarding best practices in effective teaching, learning, instructional technology, instructional design, Moodle, distance learning, and accessibility
  • Works with the Director to coordinate marketing and student recruitment activities to promote and increase distance learning offerings and enrollments
  • Maintains active membership in the North Carolina Association of Distance Learning (NC3ADL)
  • Participates in appropriate committees and task forces as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the College's mission, core values and goals

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

    Two (2) years' teaching experience, preferably at the post-secondary level.

    Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

    Experience in Moodle and other open-source learning platforms and technologies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of computer assisted learning models
  • Knowledge of learning management systems such as Moodle/Blackboard
  • Knowledge of College policies and procedures related to distance education
  • Current complex principles and practices of distance learning
  • Organizational and management practices applicable to the analysis and evaluations of programs, policies and operational needs
  • Community college operations
  • Knowledge of digital accessibility and ADA, Section 504 and Section 508

 
Skills

  • Intermediate computer skills and technical proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Proficiency in planning, organization, communication, presentation, negotiation, training, and interpersonal skills
  • Effective verbal, listening and written communication skills
