Minimum Qualifications

Required educational background:

  • Master's Degree required in Education, Higher Education, Counseling, Social Work, or other related field;
  • Or currently enrolled, or must be enrolled within a year and completed within 3 years.

Required kind and number years of work experience:

  • Four years of professional experience in an educational setting.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of best practices for promoting academic achievement and college access;
  • Knowledge of high school education requirements, the college admissions process, and financial aid and scholarship opportunities;
  • Ability to effectively plan and implement program activities and services;
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to assist students with development of academic skills, achieving academic success by overcoming challenges, and preparing for college transition;
  • Ability to foster and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with internal and external partners;
  • Ability to analyze data and prepare reports;
  • Ability to effectively present information orally and in writing to administrators, faculty, students, and the community;
  • Demonstrated ability to foster trusting relationships with first-generation, low-income students

  • Master's degree; 
  • Experience coordinating educational programs or events;
  • Experience working in a community college;
  • Knowledge of and experience specifically with TRiO or UB services, objectives, and regulations;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Administrative experience;
  • Experience managing budgets;
  • Experience with Blumen or Datatel as data management systems or Aviso Coaching software;
  • Personal experience overcoming academic, cultural, financial, or other obstacles similar to those faced by low-income or first-generation students participating in the Upward Bound program.

Position Description

The Assistant Director oversees and facilitates the planning, implementation and enrollment for all college preparation programs and activities  for approximately 180 high school students in the Upward Bound Programs; and assists the Director with overall program evaluation and compilation for the Department of Education regulations. 

The Upward Bound (UB) program provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

The Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in math and science, and ultimately careers in the math and science profession.

Together, the Upward Bound programs at Central Carolina Community College serve over 180 low-income and first-generation students from Harnett and Lee Counties in grades 9 through 12 through year-round programming.

The Assistant Director will serve as a model through active, hands-on program participation, including planning, accompanying, and supervising students during Saturday Sessions, on college visits and cultural enrichment trips, including overnight and out-of-state/in-state trips; staying current on best practices in the field through attendance at meetings, conferences and seminars (state, local and national, including overnight stays) related to programs mission and goals (up to approximately 20 days annually).

Essential Duties

 

  • Lead the effort to continuously recruit and retain at least 60 participants per program each year including attending school events and making presentations;
  • Plan and execute all Upward Bound activities and services focused on Financial Literacy education, Community Service, and Career Exploration;
  • Lead engaging and high quality Upward Bound student activities and services, including Saturday Sessions during the academic year and 6-week programs for each cohort during the summer;
  • Conduct monthly school visits and provide individual and group advising to support students' academic success, high school graduation, and enrollment in postsecondary education in two (2) assigned high schools;
  • Develop new initiatives to support the college readiness needs of all participants upon program entry and evaluate their progress annually;
  • In consultation with the Director, recruit, interview and select well-qualified program staff for the summer programs;
  • Plan and execute the Summer Internship work study program for each cohort during the summer; 
  • Oversee Residential Summer Program at Campbell University and all summer program part-time staff by providing direction, input and feedback;
  • Assist Director with programmatic budget including purchasing processes, maintaining fiscal records, and communicating as needed with the Controller and the Business Office;
  • Assist Director in the preparation of Annual Performance Reports for the Department of Education;
  • Coordinate transportation logistics for all program events; 
  • Document all contacts and services electronically and in student files, maintaining confidentiality of student data;
  • Attends meetings, conferences and seminars (State, Local and National) related to programs mission and goals;
  • Report monthly to Director of Upward Bound Programs;
  • Engage with other TRiO staff members to provide formative assessment and continuous improvement of program delivery;
  • Complete the annual five-hour staff development;
  • Encourage and support College activities, policies, procedures, and philosophies;
  • Perform other duties as assigned;
  • Other duties as assigned.
