DEFINITION:

 

To assist the Network Administrator by performing a variety of technical duties in the design, installation, implementation, security, and maintenance of various network systems.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

 

  • Receives general supervision from the Infrastructure Team Manager.
  • Exercises no supervision.

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTION STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 
Essential Functions:
 

  • Help to ensure reliable network access and adequate network performance with use of the following;

 

  1. Layer 2 and Layer 3 Ethernet access and aggregation switches
  2. Network Firewalls and Intrusion Prevention devices 
  3. Network Access Control appliances 
  4. WAN optimization and application traffic management systems
  5. High-speed router clustering device for WAN 

 

  • Working knowledge of these type devices is preferred.  
  • Design, deploy, and maintain the college wireless network.
  • Administer role-based network security systems, including systems that implement 802.1x protocols.
  • Assist in proactively monitoring all networks for intrusion, providing best bandwidth availability, and to anticipate future need for additional bandwidth.
  • Respond to questions and problems for IT Services staff regarding network connectivity and security concerns.
  • Help with configuration adjustments and documentation as required to achieve and maintain regulation compliance.
  • Assist in maintaining system security at all times.
  • Assist in design, change implementation, and maintenance of college networks.
  • Help coordinate and manage network service providers and contractors.
  • Assist in management and coordination of Wide Area Networks.
  • Assist in enhancing and maintaining network security including intrusion detection/ prevention and Firewall security.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of security strategies and protecting against misuse of both the internal and external networks.
  • Review system logs for system integrity, security, and quality control.
  • Provide resource support for recommendations on network hardware and software purchases.

 
Other Important Functions:
 

  • Perform regular backups of the configuration of the devices above and store in a safe place for disaster recovery.
  • Help to configure and maintain VPN access to college network for remote users.
  • Assist in installing and modify network hardware, software, and applications to facilitate network processes.
  • Clean, organize and maintain network systems facilities and related storage areas.  Keep network communication rooms clean and organized and patch cords neat and orderly.
  • Monitor the status of communication room UPSs and building UPSs for proper operation.
  • Maintain a record of all work activities, including the repair, maintenance, testing, and replacement of network related devices.
  • Assist in compiling and preparing an Information Technology Services handbook; document problems, solutions, programs, and procedures for computer network system.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Some evening and weekend hours may be required.

 

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:
 

  • VLAN management, TCP/IP routing, and network communication protocols such as SNMP and spanning tree.
  • Working knowledge of network drawing applications.   
  • Active Directory and DNS/DHCP helpful.
  • Familiarity with Linux OS commands helpful.
  • Familiarity with networking technology practices, topologies, protocols, configuration, management, implementation, and troubleshooting.
  • Industry “Best Practices” of network security practices including firewall management and intrusion detection/prevention, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with principles and procedures of computer network system installation and maintenance.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.

 
Ability to:
 

  • Install, test, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot network equipment.
  • Troubleshoot network and security problems as required.
  • Use various packet capture techniques and analyze those captures to troubleshoot and diagnose network connectivity problems.
  • Prepare and maintain work records.
  • Quickly master the methods, materials, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of networks and network equipment.
  • Assist in network security practices including firewall management and intrusion detection/prevention, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
