Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in student personnel, counseling, adult or higher education, or related discipline.
  • Five years of progressive leadership experience in enrollment services. Proven success in creating and implementing a strategic recruitment and enrollment management plan.
  • Demonstrated project management skills to oversee several projects concurrently and meet deadlines effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral Degree from a regionally accredited institution, earned or in progress
  • Seven years of progressive leadership experience in enrollment services
  • Leadership experience in the North Carolina Community College System

Position Description

General Function:

The Assistant Vice President of Student Engagement (AVPSE) will provide College-wide leadership and oversight for the College’s student life, leadership, and development functions, as well as wraparound support. The AVPSE will collaborate with other College departments and campuses to promote students' active engagement with the College, to enhance student learning inside and outside the classroom, and to create wraparound services that will support students to persist and complete. The AVPSE will provide vision and strategic planning that supports the work of campuses and that fulfills the College’s mission and strategic objective of Student Success.  The AVPSE will promote best practices pertaining to student leadership development, student governance and conduct, service engagement, student programming, recreation/wellness programs, student organizations, and wraparound support.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership and Vision

  • Develop, support, and maintain a student life model that encourages student engagement and provides a consistent student experience through core functional areas while allowing for campus flexibility; develop a student life program assessment process that encourages on-going program and process improvements.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation, evaluation, and assessment of measurable student learning outcomes for Student Life programs. The measureable outcomes will dovetail with the College’s assessment and strategic plans.
  • Create and implement a “one college” vision for wraparound services, to include maintaining on-going communication, training, and support to the campus wraparound services leads; convening wraparound services management group meetings on a regular basis; and identifying and communicating professional development and training opportunities for College-wide wraparound services staff.
  • Identify and develop best practices in regards to student life programs; provide training, guidance, and support to the leadership of student engagement in regards to student leadership development programs, student governance, service engagement, student programming, recreation/wellness programs, and student organizations and wraparound service.
  • Provide leadership for all College-wide student life programs and events which could include, but are not limited to Service Learning, student leadership programing, student leadership conference, and other national student development opportunities.
  • Partner with college leadership on the creation and implementation of a comprehensive approach to wraparound services, to include regular meetings with campus wraparound services staff.
  • Support the Student Government Association and advocate for student involvement in College event planning and in the overall College governance structure.
  • Develop, refine, and influence College and campus policy and procedure directing or affecting the student life and wraparound services functions. 
  • Develop and maintain an annual Student Life calendar highlighting major College-wide events.
  • Conduct all activities with an appreciation and respect for diversity of people, styles, and views; promote same as an integral part of one’s work; assist the College President’s Office in the delivery of multicultural programming; demonstrate an understanding of and develop student programming that promotes the personal growth of students by enhancing their understanding of their own, as well as an understanding others, culture, heritage and identities.
  • Oversee student conduct procedures in accordance with the college student code of conduct.

Effective Communication

  • Develop and provide on-going communication, training, and support to the student engagement directors; convene cross-functional management group meetings on a regular basis; identify and communicate professional development and training opportunities for College-wide student life staff; develop and host at least one major professional development activity each year for student engagement staff.
  • Represent the College at meetings, conferences, and events, etc., as appropriate.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to promote the assigned areas to various constituencies including students, parents, faculty and staff members, alumni, and community stakeholders.

Budget Management

  • Receive and evaluate recommended annual budgets.  Correlate budget to items necessary to implement strategic plan. Work with budget managers to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Assume accountability for overall budget management for assigned areas.

Personnel Management

  • Provide guidance on the search for and employment of personnel; evaluation and status of personnel; assign duties and responsibilities as necessary. Serve on interview committees, as appropriate.
  • Identify and communicate professional development and training opportunities for College-wide student engagement staff
  • Develop and host at least one major professional development activity each year for student engagement staff.
  • Assures assessment of functional area needs, investigates and develops alternative strategies, establishes priorities and goals, recommends implementation activities, and evaluates progress.
  • Evaluate direct reports on a yearly basis in coordination with the Vice President.
  • Effectively manage disciplinary issues in coordination with Human Resources.

Student Services

  • Provide process for seamless onboarding of new students, in collaboration with the AVPESS to ensure that all students receive access to all support resources.
  • Provide leadership for the design of processes, services, and offerings to meet student needs.
  • Consult with College leadership to provide wraparound services and supports for all credit and non-credit students 
  • Oversee grievance processes.

General Administration

  • Collaborate with the Vice President of Student Affairs and/or College leadership, to ensure compliance, including preparing and submitting reports, with College policies, procedures, and requirements established by legal statutes, board policies, and administrative decisions; interpret and enforce external agencies regulations, policies, and practices (Department of Education Title IV, FERPA, etc.)
  • Provide leadership for the implementation policies, rules, procedures, and regulations pertaining to the administration of all areas of responsibility.
  • Guide and direct administrative assistant in ways to serve areas of responsibility.
  • Additional duties include facilitating emerging trends in advising and registration activities.
  • Serves on college committees associated with job functions, or representing the College as needed.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
