Minimum Qualifications

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Master’s degree in an educational field
  • Minimum of seven years of successful, progressive leadership experience in higher education.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience in developing, executing, and evaluating policies.
  • Experience working with faculty.  
  • Successful experience building collaborative partnerships with various constituencies.
  • Strong critical and reasoning skills; superior written and oral communication skills.

  • Use data and statistics to make decisions related to academic and student services offerings.
  • Identify trends, foresee problems, and resolve conflicts.
  • Establish credibility in the community we serve.

Position Description

The Associate Vice President of Student Services leads the College’s student services division.  The AVP of SS serves as the chief student services officer of the College and ensures service to students aligns with the College’s mission, vision, values, and strategic plan. The AVP of SS recommends and implements policies, procedures, and practices that foster and promote learning throughout the College; recommends organizational structures, personnel, and resources to ensure a student/learner-centered environment at all levels.  The Vice President of Student Services has overall responsibility for providing leadership, management, and supervision for student services programs and personnel, including admissions and enrollment management, financial aid, recruiting and outreach, retention, academic advising and support services, career services, student activities and student conduct/Title IX administration.  The AVP reports to the Vice President of Learning, Student Engagement, and Success and works collaboratively with student services staff, faculty, and administration to provide quality service to students.  The AVP is an essential member of the academic and student services divisions, the President’s Cabinet, and other College committees as required.
 
This position is assigned to the VGCC Main Campus in Henderson, NC; although, some travel to other counties in the college’s service area is expected. Consistent with VGCC’s Teleworking Policy, this position is eligible for up to 1 day per week of telework after the first 6 months of employment.

Essential Duties:

  • Serve as the VGCC student experience leader by designing and implementing enrollment and communication plans to promote equity in student access and success.  
  • Leads the design, planning, and implementation of a one-service model for the college that integrates service delivery for continuing education and curriculum programs.
  • Provide leadership that ensures the College offers a comprehensive array of student services and student development programs focused on equitable student access and success.
  • Recommend, develop, and implement student services policies, procedures and practices that promote student access and success and support the educational programs and goals of the College.
  • Recommend organizational structures, personnel, and resources to ensure a student-centered/learner-centered environment at all levels.
  • Safeguard the integrity of the institution; provide fiscal responsibility and accountability for assets and resources.
  • Ensure student services, programs, and related policies comply with all state and federal regulations:  the US Department of Education, the NC Community College System, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and other applicable regulatory bodies.  
  • Advise the Vice President on matters related to College policies and strategic plans.
  • Guide and support staff through strong relationships and professional development.  
  • Analyze and evaluate student enrollment and retention data; use data in strategic decision-making.
  • Lead service and program evaluation to ensure quality in all aspects of the College’s student services division.
  • Provide leadership for directing college-wide activities related to student due-process in conduct and Title IX matters, including, but not limited to, writing appropriate policies and procedures. 
  • Represent the College externally in partnerships and matters relating to the College’s service to students.
