Minimum Qualifications

Education:  Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, or related field and 2 years of experience as a technician in the automotive or diesel industry, OR, Diesel/Automotive industry certifications and 5 years of experience as a technician in the automotive or diesel industry.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Teaching and administrative experience leading to this level of responsibility. 
  • Demonstration of skills in the area of: communication, organization, and managing multiple priorities; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, community groups, and others; and demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative team environment.  
  • Computer Skills – the applicant must have basic computer keyboarding skills. Microsoft Office knowledge is a plus as this position will require the use of this software. 
  • Subject area knowledge: Wheel and tire servicing; front-end alignments; vehicle computer diagnostics using scan tools and troubleshooting methods; basic electrical theory; multi-meter and schematic knowledge; engine repair; measuring and torquing tools; micrometer usage; knowledge of ABS, hydraulic, pneudraulic, and air braking systems; gasoline and diesel fuel systems of various types; automatic and manual transmission diagnosis and repair; vehicle differentials and driveline systems; diagnosing ignition systems of various types; diagnosing vehicle HVAC systems of various types
  • Preferred: Experience using LMS such as Moodle or Blackboard.

Physical Demands:

Licensing Requirements:

  • Industry certificates are a plus
  • Must have a valid driver's license

Education:  Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, or related field, industry certifications in subject matter and 5 years of experience as a technician in the automotive or diesel industry. Some teaching/training experience.

Position Description

Carteret Community  College is accepting applications for a full-time (10-month) Automotive/Diesel Instructor for classes starting January 2, 2023.

The Automotive/Diesel Instructor will conduct college courses for the undergraduate students by performing the essential duties of teaching and advising students,  as well as participating in professional development, institutional service to the College, and actively participating in and building community relations and high school partnerships.

Salary Range:   Associate degree level:  $4,535. to $5,669 per month, commensurate with education, experience, and industry certifications

Examples of Essential Duties include:

Teaching and Learning:

  • Teach assigned classes on topics including: wheel and tire servicing; front-end alignment; vehicle computer diagnostics using scan tools and troubleshooting methods; basic electrical theory as well as multi-meter usage and schematics; engine repair; measuring and torquing tools; micrometer usage; braking systems to include ABS, hydraulic, pneudraulic, and air; gasoline and diesel fuel systems; automatic and manual transmissions; vehicle differentials and driveline systems; ignition systems; vehicle HVAC
  • Maintain shop safety and orderliness and involve students daily in the tasks of organizing, cleaning, and inspecting the area for potential safety hazards.
  • Follow the course guidelines to design and implement instructional activities that are appropriate and meaningful and evaluate student performance and learning outcomes.
  • Maintain all required college records including attendance and grade reports, etc.
  • Evaluate student performance using methods appropriate to the course.
  • Teaching load may include continuing education courses as appropriate.
  • The instructor will monitor supplies and equipment and recommend purchases, equipment repairs, and maintenance of classroom and laboratory facilities as needed to the lead instructors.
  • Participate in departmental activities relative to revising and updating the program(s) in the area of expertise.
  • Assist with the development of new programs in the area of expertise.
  • Assist in the scheduling of classes.
  • Utilize student learning outcomes assessment results to improve courses/program

 Advising:

  • Provide assistance to advisees.
  • Participate in department, division and college-wide advising activities.
  • Learn and maintain proficiency with program requirements of assigned advisees.
  • Use the computer and the college’s student information system to assist advisees.
  • Follow up on all assigned advisees.
  • Attend training sessions relative to advising.

 Professional Development:

  • Develop a professional development plan that is approved by the dean and participate in those activities that achieve approved professional development activities.
  • Maintain current licensure, certification, or other professional credentials required for position.
  • Keep abreast of current technology.
  • Attend workshops, conferences, and professional meetings.
  • Participate in on-campus professional development activities

Institutional Service:

  • Adhere to all institutional policies and procedures.
  • Attend all required department, division, and college-wide meetings.
  • Service on committees as required.
  • Participate in college-wide activities.

Community Relations:

  • Maintain contact with specialized vocations where applicable.
  • Be alert to public relations opportunities and use these to promote the college and the department.
  • Assist in planning and conducting advisory committee meetings.

 High School Partnerships:

  • Will establish partnerships and linkages with public high schools and Adult High School and teach courses as designated
