Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of lab safety procedures and processes
Excellent reading comprehension, active listening, and critical thinking skills
Good organizational skills
Able to perform normal duties with minimal supervision
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
Proficient in MS Office products including MS Word, Excel, and Power Point
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field

Pay Grade: Technician 3
Assists in organization, preparation, and maintenance of Wake Tech Biology lab
Responsibilities and Duties (*Essential Functions):
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary job functions herein described.
*Prepares and sets-up materials for lab exercises, including preparing chemicals, solutions, supplies, instruments and equipment
*Monitors each week's lab set-up several times daily; prior to each class, re-organizes, cleans up, and replenishes as necessary
*Dismantles each week's lab exercise when finished
*Implements and promotes lab safety by storing waste and chemicals in an OSHA-approved manner; maintains MSDS files; keeps lab rooms and prep areas clean and free of clutter; inspects safety equipment such as eye wash stations and first aid kits on a monthly basis; reviews safety procedures in the lab manual for each lab activity; and supplies instructors with a list of safety concerns for each lab activity
Assists instructors in setting up hands-on evaluations and practical exams; sets up standardized lab practicals as modified by instructors
Maintains and orders equipment and supplies for the labs, including perishable and living specimens such as cultures, aquaria, etc
Maintains an accurate inventory of supplies and equipment
Confers with instructors to determine supply and equipment needs
Maintains budget information for lab supplies and equipment
Maintains files, including copies of student handouts as well as prep sheets for each lab exercise, lab safety forms and ordering/budget and maintenance information
Works closely with lab technicians in other departments and divisions to share and more fully utilize equipment
Executes start-up studies; assesses and analyzes results of new experiments before implementation with students
Surpluses or removes outdated or old supplies, equipment, and specimens when needed; ensure safe disposal of preserved specimens and liquid preservations
Acts as a substitute for lab instructors or teaches assigned labs as needed
Promotes continuous improvement by completing an annual applied benchmark project on an individual or a group basis
