Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of Master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, life science, pharmaceutical science or closely related field from an accredited college or university is required.  Extensive knowledge of biotechnology laboratory techniques, including recombinant DNA technology, fermentation, protein purification, HPLC, mammalian cell culture, and immunological techniques preferred.  Experience with cGMPs, SOPs, and other FDA regulated documentation is recommended.  Experience with pharmaceutical analytical processes and industrial microbiology preferred.  Two years full-time teaching is recommended preferably in a college or community college setting.  Two or more years of experience working in a biotechnology industry or academic research laboratory setting is recommended.  Experience working in a cGMP facility preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Physical Requirements:   Must be physically able to operate a variety of types of office and other equipment including computer, copier, calculator, sophisticated lab equipment, audio-visual equipment, etc.  Must be physically able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work; position requires walking, standing, stooping, reaching, crouching, fingering, etc. for extended periods of time.  Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of approximately forty pounds.

 

Data Conception:   Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

 

Interpersonal Communication:   Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.  Includes the giving of instructions to students.  Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.

 

Language Ability:   Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, and various books such as various manuals, PCC handbook and catalog, various texts, PCC FACT book, etc.  Requires the ability to prepare various documents and reports such as lesson plans, grade/evaluation reports, attendance report, end-of quarter reports, long-range plans, etc., using the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar.  Requires the ability to communicate with co-workers, supervisor, subordinates, other PCC personnel, etc. with poise, voice control, and confidence.  Requires the ability to be conversant in the theory, principles, and methods of effective and persuasive speaking, voice and diction, phonetics, and discussion and debate.

Intelligence:   Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.  Must be able to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Requires the ability to apply rational systems such as education (teaching), biotechnology, biology, chemistry, etc., in order to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.

 

Verbal Aptitude:   Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.  Must be able to instruct others via effective verbal communication.

 

Numerical Aptitude:   Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers; determine percentages; utilize decimals; determine time and weight; apply principles of algebra; apply descriptive statistics; etc.  Must be able to perform laboratory math (including general dilutions, serial dilutions, statistical analysis, metric conversions, concentration (Molarity/Molality), etc.)

 

Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

 

Motor Coordination:   Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in utilizing automated office, audio-visual equipment, and biotechnology lab equipment, etc. 

 

Manual Dexterity:   Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, laboratory equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.  Must have high levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

 

Color Discrimination:   Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

 

Interpersonal Temperament:   Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions.   Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency. 

 

Physical Communication:  Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)

 

Position Description

Teaches assigned courses in biotechnology and biology, including courses associated with the PCC Technical Academy.  Also teaches and manages continuing education BioWork course offerings.  Performs related administrative and recordkeeping duties such as evaluating textbooks; preparing lesson plans, course syllabi, handouts, tests, etc.; gathering resources for class; ordering and arranging audio-visual materials for class; conducting class; conducting critiques of students' work; grading assignments; maintaining files; etc.  Prepares and/or completes various reports and forms related to classes including 20% reports, end-of-quarter reports, grade reports, rolls, etc.  

 

Instructs students in a lab setting.  Performs such duties as developing new lab activities, preparing labs, maintaining lab cultures when necessary, conducting lab experiments, setting up lab exams, cleaning lab, etc.  Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and equipment; orders supplies as needed and repairs or arranges for repairs of equipment as needed.

 

 

Course development:  May be required to develop new courses or laboratory enhancement activities as determined by industry needs.  May be required to develop material for online coursework using Moodle or other LMS.

 

Performs various student-related duties including advising students, assisting students with class registration, counseling with students, assisting students with career and study skills, writing letters of recommendation, etc.  Completes various student forms such as withdrawals, registration, drop/add, and credit by examination. 

Remains active in professional organizations and activities.  Keeps abreast of newest research and technological advances relative to the teaching of biotechnology courses by reading professional journals and attending seminars, conferences, meetings, etc.

 

Receives, reviews, processes, files and/or submits a variety of documents and reports such as attendance report, grade sheets, evaluation forms, hazardous material reports, incident reports, professional development forms, various other forms, memos, and general letters of correspondence.

 

Operates, utilizes, and maintains various types of laboratory and office equipment and supplies including computers, calculator, copier, general office supplies, centrifuges, incubators, laminar flow hoods, water purification system, autoclaves, fermentation apparatus, thermalcyclers, microscopes, gel digital photo documentation system, low pressure chromatography system, HPLC, CO2 incubators for cell culture, shaking incubator, water baths, automated slide stainer, mechanical tools, audio-visual equipment, lab supplies, etc.

 

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Maintains good working relationships and communicates information within the Department and with all departments/divisions on campus.  Serves on various College committees and organizations and attends meetings as required.  Assists part-time instructors and substitutes for absent instructors as needed.

 

Responds to phone calls, providing information and answering inquiries as appropriate.

 

Performs other duties as required.
