Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physiology, biology, molecular biology, life science, pharmaceutical science, education, or related field from an accredited college or university is required.  Master’s degree is preferred.  Extensive knowledge of biotechnology industry, careers, job requirements, and employability skills required.  Two or more years of experience working in the biotechnology industry is preferred.  CDL license or interest in obtaining one highly desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

Physical Requirements:   Must be physically able to operate a variety of types of office and other equipment  including computer, copier, calculator, basic lab equipment, audio-visual equipment, etc.  Must be physically able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work; position requires walking, standing, stooping, reaching, crouching, fingering, etc. for extended periods of time.  Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of approximately forty pounds.

 

Data Conception:   Requires the ability to compare and or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.

 

Interpersonal Communication:   Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.  Includes the giving of instructions to students.  Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.

 

Language Ability:   Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, and various books such as various manuals, PCC handbook and catalog, various texts, etc.  Requires the ability to prepare various documents and reports such as end-of quarter reports, long-range plans, etc., using the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar.  Requires the ability to communicate with co-workers, supervisor, subordinates, other PCC personnel, etc. with poise, voice control, and confidence. Requires the ability to be conversant in the theory, principles, and methods of effective and persuasive speaking, voice and diction, phonetics, and discussion and debate.

 

Intelligence:   Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.  Must be able to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Requires the ability to apply rational systems such as education (teaching), biotechnology, biology, chemistry, etc., in order to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.

 

Verbal Aptitude:   Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.  Must be able to instruct others via effective verbal communication.

 

Numerical Aptitude:   Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers; determine percentages; utilize decimals; determine time and weight; apply principles of algebra; apply descriptive statistics; etc.  

 

Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

 

Motor Coordination:   Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in utilizing automated office, audio-visual equipment, and biotechnology lab equipment, etc.

  

Manual Dexterity:   Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, laboratory equipment, control knobs, switches, etc.  Must have high levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

 

Color Discrimination:   Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

 

Interpersonal Temperament:   Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions.   Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency.  

 

Physical Communication:  Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)

Position Description

Under limited supervision, serves as a liaison between Pitt Community College, Pitt County Schools, and Pitt County Workforce Development boards and coordinates with PCC Career Services and local biotechnology industry partners to build career pathways for Pitt County high school students and adult learners to complete biotechnology-related PCC programs and enter the biotechnology workforce. Department Chair, Biotechnology.

Support a diverse group of students including adult learners, high school students, women, and underrepresented minorities in STEM by connecting students to programs/systems aimed to reduce barriers. Coordinate field trips, guest speakers, campus events, and other industry interaction for current and prospective biotechnology students at PCC.  In conjunction with PCC Career Services, provide career coaching, employability skills assessment and training, job search awareness, interview preparation, and resume writing assistance to PCC biotechnology students.  Research and communicate job openings to PCC biotechnology students and alumni.  Monitor student progress in academic pathways and document activities in case management systems.

Raise awareness of biotechnology education pathways and local career opportunities through strong relationships with local school systems and community partners. Coordinate with PCC Recruitment and First Year Experience to plan and implement biotechnology student recruitment programming and experiences at local schools, partner community colleges, community sites, and at on campus events.  Educate Pitt County Schools educators, counselors, and administrators on the biotechnology career and education opportunities provided by the PCC Biotechnology Department.  Raise awareness of Biotechnology Degree 1 + 1 Articulation agreements with partnering community colleges in eastern NC.  Collaborate with regional efforts (eg. NC Biotechnology Center and NC BioNetwork) to create a regional pool of bio sector candidates entering the local workforce.  Utilize all PCC resources, including the Biotechnology Mobile Lab, to educate prospective students and industry partners on PCC Biotechnology programs and opportunities.  Coordinate with PCC Marketing Department to maintain the PCC Biotechnology webpage and social media accounts, ensuring they are informative and engaging by periodically updating pictures, videos, career pathway and career opportunity information and alumni testimonials.  

Coordinate with local biotechnology industry partners to identify industry needs and critical skill gaps for biotechnology graduates.  Serve on the Biotechnology Advisory Committee to communicate local workforce needs.  Participate in regional career pathway development initiatives.

Perform various student-related duties including counseling students, assisting students with career and study skills, writing letters of recommendation, etc

Remain active in professional organizations and activities.  Keep abreast of newest research and technological advances relative to the biotechnology industry by reading professional journals and attending seminars, conferences, meetings, etc.

Receives, reviews, processes, files and/or submits a variety of documents and reports such as evaluation forms, incident reports, professional development forms, various other forms, memos, and general letters of correspondence.

Operates, utilizes, and maintains various types of office equipment and supplies including computers, calculator, copier, and general office supplies.  Also operates and utilizes various laboratory equipment associated with prospective biotechnology student recruiting events. Utilizes software programs such as Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Datatel.  Utilizes digital forms and other functions associated with the PCC Portal and assists in data collection.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Maintains good working relationships and communicates information within the Department and with all departments/divisions on campus.  Serves on various College committees and organizations and attends meetings as required.  Assists part-time instructors and substitutes for absent instructors as needed.

Responds to phone calls and emails, providing information and answering inquiries as appropriate.

Completes required annual professional development hours.

Performs other duties as required.
