Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED
  • At least 2 years of experience working with adult students that have been diagnosed with intellectual disabilities
  • Understanding of and commitment to the unique nature and role of education and skill development for adults diagnosed with developmental disabilities
  • Ability to work with students who may be dually diagnosed with mental health issues, physical and medical issues, as well as developmental disabilities
  • NCI Certification and CPR
  • General Statute 122C-80 Criminal History Record consent is required as well as fingerprint check if the applicant has been a resident of NC for less than 5 years

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree

Position Description

GENERAL FUNCTION:

The BIP Instructional Aide is responsible for assisting the instructor with teaching individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities at the Brunswick Interagency Program. Responsibilities include assistance with lesson plan development, testing and instruction in the classroom.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with daily lesson plans in curriculum area
  • Provides guidance in order to achieve program goals and objectives
  • Provides an atmosphere, which stimulates learner to strive toward independence and self-esteem
  • Assisting in eliminating or decreasing any mental, physical, or social problems that may arise that prohibits or hinders the normalization process
  • Provides physical assistance for learners with various disabilities and assist instructors with teaching learners in accordance with goals based in individual goal plans
  • Assists with pre-vocational skill training for learners and assist in developing creative learning activities inside and outside of the classroom
  • Assists instructor with testing and recording learner’s progress on a bi-weekly schedule
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be physically able to lift, carry, push, pull or other wise move objects, including the human body
  • Must be physically able to push or pull a wheelchair to move individuals if necessary

 

OTHER RELEVANT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge and support of College policies and procedures
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office, Office 365, and Internet
