: High School/GED or higher certification; Current or Retired Certified Law Enforcement Officer; Valid NC Criminal Justice General Instructor Certification, or Specialized Instructor Certification with a valid, and current CPR certification for the following topical areas:

Subject Control/Arrest Techniques, First Responder, Firearms, Law Enforcement Driver Training,

 Physical Fitness Training, Explosives and Hazardous Material Emergencies.

Position Description

General function:

Brunswick Community College is a comprehensive institution which places primary emphases on excellence in classroom instruction. Faculty members are expected to demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the following areas throughout their employment at the college.

 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Instructor Responsibilities
  1. Demonstrate a thorough and accurate knowledge of their field or discipline.
  2. Display an ability to interpret and evaluate the theories of their field of discipline.
  3. Connect their subject matter with related fields.
  4. Stay current in their subject matter through professional development, involvement in professional organizations, and attending professional meetings, conferences, or workshops, to include instructor updates issued by the NC Training and Standards Commission.
  5. Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience when appropriate.
  6. Develop and use current lesson plans provided by the School Director. Instructors must conduct all required practical exercises and utilize all mandated equipment and audio-visual aids noted in the lesson plans and/or instructor notes.
  7. Conduct safety briefings prior to the commencement of any practical exercises that could result in injuries or death.
  1. Teaching Performance
  1. Teach a course load appropriate to their field or discipline.
  2. Plan and organize instruction in ways that maximize documented student learning.
  3. Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students.
  4. Modify, where appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs, and be familiar with adult learning concepts.
  5. Employ available instructional technology, i.e the internet, interactive technology, when appropriate.
  6. Encourage the development of communication skills and higher order thinking skills through appropriate assignments and practical exercises.
  7. As established by the NC Training and Standards Commission, the instructor must successfully teach a minimum of 12 hours within a three year period, properly documented on a Commission Instructor Evaluation Form.

Working Conditions: Classroom environment. Training may occur during inclement weather.
