Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. 
  • Must possess current certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of North Carolina as described in North Carolina Statutes.  
  • Five (5) years of experience as a Certified Law Enforcement Officer. 
  • Minimum of 21 years of age on date of hire. 
  • Must successfully complete drug screening and background check.
  • Must be legally qualified to possess and use a firearm.
  • Possess current valid North Carolina driver’s license. 

Preferred Qualifications

Associate degree preferred.

Position Description

The Campus Police Officer will report to the Chief of Campus Police. The Campus Police Officer is a certified law enforcement official with the power of arrest.  In the absence of the Police Chief, directs and coordinates the performance of campus security in a manner that will protect the public’s investment and support the College’s operational objectives.  The officer will respond to students, faculty/staff and visitor calls for service on the SCC campus and will implement programs in law enforcement, campus policing, health and safety, parking and traffic and crime prevention.

Essential Duties:

  • Establish and maintain a good working relationship with Campus Police Chief, co-workers, faculty, staff, students, and the general public, by providing excellent customer service. 
  • Assist in providing a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment for all students and educators. 
  • Responds to calls/request from campus officials for police service; attempts to resolve disputes, disturbances and other incidents through counseling or referral.
  • Provides support and assistance to faculty, staff, and students. Takes appropriate police action in emergency situations. 
  • Conducts criminal investigations in accordance with all applicable legal requirements, including all applicable laws, regulations, and policies governing the use of force, interrogations, searches and arrests. 
  • Enforces regulations of the College; arrests offenders; makes felony and misdemeanor arrests. Testifies in criminal and civil court proceedings; gives depositions. 
  • Conducts routine preventative patrol of assigned school premises and surrounding areas; maintains an open line of communication with all members of the campus community. 
  • Prepares written reports, forms, and other documents as required. Completes daily, weekly, and monthly reports as required.
  • Participates in the extracurricular activities and meetings as requested. 
  • Participates in campus activities, student organizations, and athletic events when invited and feasible. 
  • Maintain the peace and safety of the campus community; responds to public disturbances; maintains civil obedience at school and campus functions. 
  • Promotes crime prevention and public safety through educational programs; makes presentations to the faculty, staff and students concerning crime prevention and related police matters in the school and campus environment.
  • To be aware at all times of the responsibility to improve the image of the uniformed law enforcement officer in the eyes of the students and the community. 
  • Attends required annual safety training and continuing education. Must complete required courses and certification as deemed necessary by the College. 
  • Attends department and College meetings as appropriate. 
  • Uses and maintains equipment, including specialized equipment, i.e. computer, fire extinguisher, radio, vehicle, uniform, weapons, etc.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned police equipment ie. vehicle, uniform, weapon, etc.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Chief of Campus Police.
