Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution and one year of academic advising experience

• Advising or case management experience in a community college and/or WIOA environment

• Knowledge of labor market needs and experience in career advising

• Experience in developing student-centered plans and goals that promote student success

• Experience in working with diverse populations

• Organized and detail oriented when completing paperwork, student records, and reports 

• Familiarity with NC Works Online system and Colleague Datatel

• Accurate and efficient with file management and tracking information in databases

• Strong customer service skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment

• Patient and approachable; willing to assist with requests and questions

• Proficient using technology including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook

• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with students and colleagues 

• Knowledge of academic programs and services across the college 

Position Description

The Career and Academic Advisor position is located on the Central Campus.  This is a grant funded position until June 30, 2020.  

Overview of Department:

The College and Career Readiness Department offers a variety of pre-college options to help students successfully transition to college or seek employment.  NextGen (formerly Work and Learn) is a grant-funded WIOA program focused on education, training, and employment.  NextGen targets out-of-school youth, ages 16 – 24. The department includes pre-GED/HiSET, Adult High School, High School Equivalency; English as a Second Language; Pathways to Careers, Career Development, Refugee Education, and Special Learning Needs. General Function

Performs a variety of tasks related to advising students regarding career direction and program/course selection. Conducts orientation, prepares academic and career plans, idenitifes and resolves student barriers, maintains student records, monitorsstudent progress.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

1.         Provides academic and career counseling to new and prospective students; explains policies, procedures, and program requirements; and assists students in selecting educational and career goals.

2.         Advises and counsels students in developing career and academic plans and planning and selecting courses and activities that meet educational and career goals.

3.         Consults with students regarding academic, career, and personal problems or barriers and assists students in obtaining support to meet these specific needs.

4.         Reviews, interprets, and evaluates applicant assessment results and other information to determine eligibility status.

5.         Maintains library of educational and career information; reviews and updates information as necessary.

6.         Designs, schedules, and facilitates training sessions for faculty on use of databases for advising purposes.

7.         Assists in coordinating visits of prospective students to College; answers questions and provides information regarding admission requirements to prospective students.

8.         Maintains records and files on advising activities; updates information and pulls inactive files.

        Experience in planning and delivering workshops
