DEFINITION:

The Career Liaison will assist middle school students with learning about different careers and identifying community college programs that enable students to achieve these goals. The Career Liaison will recruit students to participate in CFCC’s Career Academy each summer.  They will cultivate programs and services for the middle school learner, so that the individual can become informed and choose an appropriate career path in high school. The Career Liaison will document and monitor the progress of students.   The Career Liaison, while on any school campus, will follow local board of education rules and will be subject to the authority of the school building administration. Requires day and evening hours and some travel; college committee assignments; professional development; and other activities. The position is grant-funded and subject to the availability of funds.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives general supervision from the Associate VP of Economic and Workforce Development.
  • Will receive direction and guidance from the middle school principal and CTE staff.            
  • Exercises no supervision.

 

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

 

Career Exploration

  1. Support outreach efforts involving middle school learners to raise career awareness of opportunities 
  2. Motivate students to participate in career exploration and Academies.
  3. Support students’ efforts for career pathways exploration.
  4. Coordinate events designed to promote awareness of career pathways.
  5. Work with school/college personnel to prepare information related to career pathways for distribution to students and parents.
  6. Follow a communication plan to ensure consistent communication with students, faculty, staff, parents, etc. 
  7. Organize college campus/industry tours.
  8. Maintain accurate and adequate confidential student records.
  9. Be knowledgeable of CFCC Career and Technical Education (CTE) and short-term workforce training programs.

Career Academies

  1. Work with West Pender Middle School to plan a 2 week summer camp.
  2. Work with CFCC faculty and staff to coordinate the summer camp and visits to various programs.
  3. Hold information sessions for parents and students regarding summer camps.
  4. Direct and analyze evaluation of Academy success.  Use results to improve the student experience.

Qualifications

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability To:  

  • Provide support, engagement, and guidance to help middle school students define their career interests and explore educational opportunities at Cape Fear Community College.
  • Improve the quality and effectiveness career exploration for middle school students and their families.
  • Motivate and inspire career exploration.
  • Plan, design, and deliver content for career development workshops and sessions.
  • Coordinate day-to-day operations by scheduling: activities, programs and speakers.
  • In collaboration with the middle school use Xello for a career path database and tool
  • Conduct workshops and sessions for students that focus on careers and educational opportunities in high school through the College and Career Promise program.
  • Provide information on careers, career pathways, and educational requirements.
  • Provide opportunities for job shadowing, mentoring, internships, visits to business and industry, and other career awareness activities.
  • Monitor and track student -career interest areas and the job market.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of coaching activities and students served.
  • Contact, schedule and arrange guest speakers from the local business community and CFCC.
  • Create partnerships and interact with a variety of external workforce development stakeholders including alumni, business and industry, governmental agencies, etc.
  • Provide enhanced career services counseling for underrepresented and first generation college students. 
  • Inform students, teachers, counselors, and parents regarding local and regional workforce needs.
  • Facilitate tours of Cape Fear Community College Campuses
  • Work independently
  • Make sound decisions and use good judgment
  • Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and systems, which ensure productive and efficient operation of the Department.  
  • Represents the College in a positive and professional manner and collaborates with academic and Student Services units to contribute to the retention of students.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
