Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred in counseling, student personnel in higher education administration, or related field; supplemented by up to three to five years previous experience and/or training involving counseling, workforce development, or career services; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines and other equipment including computer, adding machine, copier, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to fifteen pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Position involves mostly sedentary work, but also requires walking, standing, reaching, etc. Must be able to lift weights of up to thirty pounds.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes the giving of assignments and instructions to assistants and students. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, and books such as various manuals, College handbook, regulations, etc. Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, etc. Must be proficient in written and oral communications skills. Has the ability to speak with poise, voice control and confidence. Must be able to make effective oral presentations.
Intelligence: Has the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; and to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form. Is able to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems such as education, management, counseling, personnel, etc., in order to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform moderately complex algebraic and geometric operations, and ability to utilize principles of basic probability and statistical inference.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office and other equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, computer, calculator, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.
Interpersonal Temperament: Has the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. The worker needs to relate to people in situations involving more than receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)
Position Description
Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to provide academic and career guidance through one-on-one student appointments, job-seeking preparation training, co-facilitating an online career services data management system, and by conducting career focused college-wide events for Pitt Community College faculty, staff, students, and graduates. Reports to the Director of Career Services & Workforce Development.
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.
• Develops and conducts workshops and seminars on resume writing, interviewing, and job search techniques for PCC curriculum students; plans special programs/activities to impact a student’s intended first destination after PCC.
• Offers specialized workshops at the request of faculty and staff.
• Counsels students one-on-one to facilitate their career/first destination post PCC by assisting them with setting realistic educational and career goals, developing plans to achieve the goals, creating professional transition tools (resumes, cover letters), and strengthening interview and job search techniques.
• Creates and utilizes surveys, or other research methods, for evaluating all related services, workshops, presentations, etc. for performance appraisals, services review, and strategic planning.
• Plans and facilitates annual career focused events for campus and for interested academic divisions.
• Attends professional development training/conferences and studies current trends to stay up-to-date in areas of expertise.
• Participates in the strategic planning process; plans, implements, and evaluates strategic plans outcomes.
• Enters data and/or processes various records and reports.
• Supports career services marketing materials creation, evolution, and dispersal; methods of marketing include, but are not limited to, physical displays, electronic presentations, social media, and/or in person events.
• Completes PCC internal and external documentation requirements (i.e. requisitions, petitions to travel, travel reimbursements, P-Card Log, etc.).
• Supports career services operation and maintenance of the College’s official career management system to ensure it is available to staff, students, alumni, and employers for the purpose of increasing access to work-based learning, internship and employment opportunities; assists with maintaining the database of job vacancies listed by employers.
• Purchases supplies and technology for the office and for the Goess Computer Lab. Renews college/office memberships in professional associations.
• Renews contracts with online career resources such as College Central Network (CCN) and Virtual Job Shadow/Strivven Media.
• Supervises and conducts reviews of the Employer Relations Specialist and of the part-time Career Services Associate.
• In the absence of the Resource Specialist, supervises the Technical Assistants working in the Goess Computer Lab, including hiring, training, developing work schedules, and submitting time sheets and summary reports.
• Supervises and conducts reviews of student ambassadors assigned to the Career Services office.
• Completes all other duties as assigned.
