Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Social/Behavioral Science, Humanities, Fine Arts or related discipline or a Master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in one of the aforementioned disciplines.
  • Three years teaching experience in a community college setting.
  • Effective working knowledge of the policies, procedures, and operations of Brunswick Community College.
  • Effective working knowledge of personal computers, Internet, and email services.
  • Experience in instruction and curriculum development at the community college level.
  • Effective experience in working with students and faculty to address issues, concerns, and resolve conflicts.
  • Effective discretion in the handling of confidential information and sensitive materials.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.

Position Description

GENERAL FUNCTION:

Under limited supervision, the Department Chair of Social and Behavioral Sciences functions as a 12-month faculty member with administrative responsibilities including providing leadership and day-to-day supervision and operation of the department. This individual is also responsible for planning and budgeting, course scheduling, instructor evaluation and recruiting and employment of full-time and adjunct faculty for all assigned courses.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:      

  • Provide leadership and promote collaboration and overall direction to both full-time and adjunct faculty.
  • Commit to a student-centered and student-success learning environment and comprehensive community college mission.
  • Serve as a mentor and provide support to faculty in establishing key goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate the annual program operating budget and track expenditures in key operational areas.
  • Recruit, hire and orient new faculty members.
  • Serve as a primary contact for students and faculty with questions or issues.
  • Lead curriculum development, program review, and student learning outcomes assessment.
  • Schedule, organize and maintain the departmental advisory committee.
  • Ability and willingness to teach assigned course load.
  • Serve as a faculty advisor and maintain office hours. 
  • Review and recommend text books, reference materials, software, etc.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through a variety of sources.
  • Complete, with accuracy, all reports and participate in meetings with the college leadership and committees as necessary.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:        

This position supervises full-time and part-time faculty and staff.
