Expected Work Hours

Full-time faculty are required to be on campus or a designated work site for a minimum of thirty (30) hours a week, four (4) days a week.

Minimum Qualifications

·        Master’s degree in Speech, Human Communication, Rhetorical Studies, or the equivalent (with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in at least one or more disciplines list above)

·        Teaching experience

·        Ability to communicate effectively

·        Working knowledge/utilization of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software applications

Preferred Qualifications

·        Experience with communication across the curriculum programming and curricula

·        Experience with communication centers

·        One academic year of full-time teaching experience or a part-time teaching equivalent at the college level

·        Experience competing on or coaching a competitive speech/debate program

·        Experience working on and/or advising a student publication

·        Familiarity with a course management system such as Canvas

·        Experience teaching web-enhanced, blended/hybrid, and online classes

·        Experience with learning outcomes assessment

·        Demonstrated innovation in teaching

·        Effective problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills

·       Evidence of a career that includes

Position Description

Job Description

The Communication Faculty is a full-time, 9-month position located primarily on the Old Charlotte Highway (OCH) Campus in Monroe, NC. Under the direction of the Department Chair for Arts and Humanities, the Communication Faculty provides quality learning opportunities that assist students in all curriculum programs in meeting their educational goals and career aspirations.  This individual has responsibility for teaching, learning, curriculum development, student learning assessment, advising, professional development, institutional service, and community relations. Courses to be taught include Interpersonal Communication, Introduction to Communication, Intercultural Communication, and Public Speaking.

Job Duties

·        Exhibit an uncompromising commitment to SPCC as a learning-centered college through the College’s mission, vision, values, core skills and learning outcomes, and delivery of instruction and services

·        Develop learning strategies and curriculum that will promote successful teaching and learning in a learning-centered environment

·        Facilitate learning through classroom activities, distance learning experiences, workforce development, and out-of-classroom activities

·        Actively participate in continuous improvement planning through the assessment of learning outcomes at the course and program levels

·        Select and use appropriate learning materials and resources, including textbooks, library resources, equipment, and supplies to enhance learning and to maintain program currency

·        Stay current with developments in the field of technology and learning theory

·        Implement long- and short-range plans in accordance with the philosophy of a learning-centered college

·        Participate in institutional, advisory, and program/instruction committees, campus activities, and representation of the college in the community

·        Participate in community events with appropriate community stakeholders in support of program and college improvement when assigned.   

·        Participate in program reviews and institutional effectiveness efforts as assigned

·        Continue professional development for the improvement of self and the program to meet the needs of a learning-centered college

·        Provide timely communication with and accessibility to students and colleagues as expected in a learning-centered college

·        Accept teaching assignments, based on the needs of the college, at one or more of the following: L.L. Polk campus (Polkton), Old Charlotte Highway campus (Monroe), in community locations (Anson and/or Union counties), or in a corrections setting (Anson county)

·        Accept teaching assignments scheduled during the day, evening, weekends, or online

·        Participate in student recruitment, retention, advising, and registration activities

·        Participate in or support the mentoring process, the SPCC Foundation, and grant identification, preparation, implementation, and evaluation

·        Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor, the dean, or the Vice President
