Minimum Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

  • Business expectations and decorum
  • Desktop operating systems and various computer software programs and their applications
  • Office procedures, methods, and components and parts used in computer equipment
  • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Methods, materials, and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of computers and peripheral equipment in a networked environment
  • Troubleshooting PC and peripheral equipment in a networked environment
  • Loading, configuration, and troubleshooting of PC applications and operating systems
  • A variety of computer software programs, programming languages, and operating systems
  • Best security practices used to ensure and maintain PC and network services integrity
  • Principals of computer networking
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping
  • Basic arithmetic
  • Basic Cyber security and risk mitigation techniques
  • Basic understanding of antivirus and antimalware software

Ability To:

  • Install, test, maintain, and repair computers and related peripheral equipment.
  • Provide technical computer and media support for classroom and lab environments.
  • Configure and troubleshoot software problems as required.
  • Prepare and maintain work records.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize according to priority.

QUALIFICATIONS:EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
 
Minimum Education/Training:

  • An Associate degree minimum with major course work in computer programming, network technology, engineering technology, database management or a related field.

Minimum Experience:

  • Two or more years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of computer and related peripheral equipment in a networked environment.
  • Experience with computers and printers within a networking environment.

Licenses: 

  • Valid NC driver’s license
  • Driving record that is within the parameters set by the college

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:

  • Prior customer service experience 
  • A+ certification and other computer industry certifications desired.
  • Security Plus preferred.
  • Experience with classroom technology 
  • Experience with cybersecurity risk mitigation 

Position Description

DEFINITION:
The Computer Technician is responsible for performing a variety of complex technical duties including the installation and maintenance of networked computer systems, peripherals, and classroom technology.  The Computer Technician will also assist faculty and staff with technical and application support, provide support at internal and external events, and will assist the IT Help Desk as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

  • Receives direct supervision from the Technical Support Manager
  • Provides support to the Help Desk Manager as needed
  • Exercises no supervision.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):

ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:
 

  • The Computer Technician maintains tests, installs, troubleshoots, and repairs computers and peripheral equipment including networked devices.  
  • Expected to load and modify computer software to facilitate computer processes as well as troubleshoot and alleviate software problems including computer operating system and application configuration. 
  • Provide technical computer and media support for classroom and lab environments as well as assisting the Help Desk when assigned.
  • The Computer Technician will also diagnose and analyze computer-related problems, develop and implement solutions, perform hardware and software upgrades, contact second-level support as needed, recommend/source computer hardware and software purchases, and notify users of system downtime, all while maintaining system security
     

Other Important Functions:

In addition to the normal job functions, there are times when the Computer Technician may be asked to complete other duties.   This may include, but is not limited to:
 

  1. Maintaining a record of all work activities, including the repair, maintenance, testing and replacement of computer and peripheral equipment, and preparing regular progress reports.
  2. Assisting with compiling and preparing computer services documentation; document problems, solutions, programs and procedures for the computer system and classroom technology.
  3. Support with registration during the fall and spring semesters as necessary.
  4. Helping with support for internal and external events as needed.
  5. Keeping facilities and related storage areas neat, clean, and organized.
  6. Aid in maintaining computer-related materials and supplies. 
  7. Participate with inventory tracking and annual audit as necessary. 
  8. Helping with the disposal of old or unwanted computer equipment and records.
  9. Respond to Cybersecurity threats as directed
  10. Assisting with Help Desk duties (phones, walk-ins, emails, chats, and tickets) as assigned.
  11. Any other duties assigned by Desktop Support Manager or Director of ITS.
  12. Performing related duties and responsibilities as required.
